Guys,

I was thinking about what to get my dad for fathers day and just happen to click on an email from St. Jude. I was considering to start giving gifts (to family members etc..) that somehow include a donation to a charitable cause...such as a St. Jude duffle bag. Habitat for Humanity tshirt. Local charity donation card with other small gift. etc.

I wanted to get some input to see what all the fathers out there would think about getting a gift like this and if anyone thinks its a good idea. Maybe this trend will catch on? I think this would even be a good thing for a kids birthday present accompanied by a gift they 'actually' like.

Any sites out there that have local charities, legit charities, or otherwise good cause donation gifts for sale?

Let me know what you think.

My sister does something like that every year for our x-mas gift its like an adopt a child/family from where she goes on mission trips too. We think its cool cuz we know others need it more than we do most times. So i think its a great idea...

I often do this for my parents, cousins, ants/uncles and/or grandmother. They all pretty much agree that we have enough stuff and buying gifts is pretty pointless. Pretty much only the kids get "real" gifts in our family (last year's X-mas between me and wife was a new microwave... lol).

My only concern w/ doing this for father's day is that, at least in my family, Mother/Father's day is set aside as a time to emphasize the relationship between Mon & child or Dad & child, and what they do for the family. So it might not be quite the right fit... but that's jut us, really it depends on what's "normal" between you and your dad.

Stay away from United Way. If you are looking for something in your area, you could try contacting the Gaston County Social Services. They will know of local programs that you donate directly. If not I know there are plenty of homeless shelters, local programs, etc in Charlotte area. There is a Salvation Army Rehab kitchen facility that I would go and help serve food too on Thanksgiving and Christmas. There is Habitat Humanity as well. i personally donate through Samaritans Purse and Lifehope. But those are more of international giving and not local.

I have a paypal account that anyone can donate to. You will be helping the less privileged (me) and doing a good thing for years (or parts) to come.
