cherokee auto tranny problem

Ive got an 89 jeep cherokee with aw-4 automatic transmission. Ive had it for about two months and havent had any problems out of it until about a week ago. I got in it to take it down through the woods and it wouldn't shift out of first gear. I checked all the fuses and they are all good. I pulled the pan off the tranny and everything looked fine. The fluid looked good and there wasn't any type of metal shavings or anything in it. THe tranny never slipped or made any kind of grinding noises before I just got in it oneday and it wouldn't shift out of first. If anyone has any idea of what the problem might be I would greatly appreciate it.
 
My guess is the shift solenoids or transmission computer.
 
have tried to manual shift but it just stays in first i talked to a chrysler guy and he said it could be a speed sensor could a speed sensor keep it from shifting?
 
Gov. solenoids. I belive that trans should have 2 gov. solenoids and a park/nuetral switch. They're above the filter and valve body. That would be my guess.

Did you disconnect the trans computer when trying to manual shift? If not disconnect it and try again. If this works then the solenoids are fine if not then it is the computer. Not sure about the speed sensor.
 
If you look under the dash just below the glove box there is a fuse there kind of hanging in the wires. Pull that fuse and then try and manually shift it. If shifts with the fuse out the trans computer is bad.

Im looking at a jeep that has this problem...

the auto transmission will manually shift, but not "automatically".

Is this an easy fix....or not?

Jeep is an 89 for $1500. Not sure if it would be worth it if I would have to swap the tranny.

Is the computer expensive/complicated to replace?

How bout the selonoids?
