Cherokee cuts off when hot

I have a 1987 Jeep Cherokee. It runs hot at a little over 210 and cuts off. After a few mins when it is cool, it will start back. It has a 160 thermostat.

I have replaced the crank sensor twice. I have replaced the map sensor, oxygen sensor, fuel pump, fuel pump relay, distributor, ignition box, water pump, thermostat, throttle body & coil pack.

It still cuts off! What else could it be? Has anyone else had this problem? Please help before I pull the last hair out of my head!

Not sure this will help but an old friend of mine had a similar problem. It turned out that the fuel line was running too close to the exhaust system. Fuel was boiling in the line. Only would take a quick look around under there to see! Though this was an old ford maverick.

i had this problem, in a 94 ZJ though. could be the same for you. it turned out to be the fuel pump. after the vehicle warmed up the fuel pump would get too hot and cut out and thus the engine would die. after sitting for a little bit it would crank up again but every time it would cut out after it got hot.

may not be it but since youve tried everything else i'd look into it.

hey guys thanks for info but still cutin off i put a new computer on it today still doin it
so if anybody has any more stuff let me know thanks

check all your fuses. also, it's possible that the new fuel pump, fuel pump relay, or coil (or any combination of the 3) could be bad. a buddy of mine said the other day that some auto parts stores have been getting some bad parts here lately

that wasnt one of the ideas any of use told you. quit spending money throwing parts at it.

check for boiling fuel like said above OR it may be the fuel pump like i said.

I don't see fuel filter on your check list. Also they should have a 210 degree Tstat as that is the normal running temp. I would let it stall and check for fuel/pressure in the fuel rail. Sounds like a fuel pump issue. Won't be the first one replaced with a bad one. happened to me.

Is it a 4.0 ? I have had this same problem. Look just behind the drivers headlight mounted to the inside of the finder there should be a little white or off white peice with some wires hooked to it. I can not remeber what it is called.(looks like a large resistor) But I had one doing the exact same thing a few years ago and this part is what was causing it. Old guy at Lexington Motors told me it was a comman problem on the early 4.0, the later models have a different fuel injection system and do not have this.

i did put fuel filter on it and put fuel presure gauge on it 40 pounds so that is not it ok i will check behind the headlight thanks

Ballast Resistor.

Could also be coil. But I'd still place my money on fuel pump. Test it multiple times. I've got a friend whose pump checked out fine the first time then tested bad twice and then it tested good later. He replaced it and hasn't has a problem since.

you need to be testing WHEN it dies...you know its working when it running....

Carbon buildup might be causing it. Could be backed up like someone mentioned with the cat. I have a 96 G. Cherokee and it would cut off on me after a cold start. Once it got warmed up it would cut off every once in a while. It was running sluggish still. Had a carbon flush done and the problem has not come back.

it has no converter on it so i know its not that i took it to shop and had it put on computer showin up in throtle body censors still checkin it out and did check fuel presuer when died thanks

well i got it it was a bad temp censor the wire was not connected good fixed wire on bottom censor it was readin -40 on onethe bottom top censor was readin 170 it did not know what to do thanks everybody for your help

How full do you keep your gas tank and how low do you run it before you fill it back up? Your fuel pump actually uses the fuel passing through it to keep all the gears in the fuel pump lubricated. The only thing it really sounds like what it is doing is vapor locking, flush your cooling system to see if it's actually flowing in the block. If thats not it your fuel lines are getting to hot.
