Cherokee power steering pressure hose

Hi all!

I have just replaced my old pressure hose, and I have a question. I tried for a couple of HOURS to get the lower connection to thread properly.

I FINALLY took the O-ring out and it worked great! Before, it would tighten, then pop off....and wouldn't tighten properly and would allow steering fluid to flow out above the connection.

I have a GMC mechanic tell me it needs that O-ring, but if it doesn't thread properly with it, how does it "need" it? What will happen if I keep that O-ring out?

I would appreciate some help from "jeep" knowledgeable guys...thanks all!
 
no O ring equals........leaking like hell
 
when? It was leaking WITH the O-ring, but not now. And how do i get the it to thread properly?
 
Not sure about the XJ's, but I know earlier Jeeps, some have an O-ring fitting, and some have a flare fitting. Did the one you replaced have a O-ring? IIRC you have to push the O-ring down in the hole and then start the thread with some pressure on the fitting till it gets enough grip to hold. Also, put some grease on the O-ring, it will help.
 
It is flared a little bit. I drove it over 20 highway miles and it hasn't started leaking. I am second-guessing things cause, as I have been told, I am a woman and don't know mechanics....although I wrench on my vehicle myself and need some supervision every now and then....

I did grease the ring..I didn't push it down, but put it on over the flare..

My real questions are; if it isn't leaking now, will it start? What will it hurt if it isn't leaking now...will it start eventually?
 
Yes, the old one had two; one on each end. So far no leaking....
 
40-miles or less round trip daily, all of em at speeds higher than 40 mph.
 
You may have done this already... but I found it was MUCH easier to thread and tighten those lines if you take the aircleaner box out first. That will give you a better angle to tighten your lines down, and a clearer view of the top of your steering box.

Concerning the o-ring, I would say that you definitely need it. But if you can get it to fit without the o-ring, without leaking, any everything is working properly... I'd say just keep an eye on it and pray that it will work without it.

If it does develop a leak, perhaps some teflon tape around the pressure fitting threads would help.
