I manged to break both of mine this weekend at VA4WDA Annual... luckily the winch cable + 50 ratchet straps held it in place long enough to get it off the trails...

Can anyone give me the dimensions for a stock Chero shackle?

Dave, If'n I ain't mistaken, they are the same width as that CJ ('78) leaf. that is, the wider packs. I can't recall off the top of my head if the fronts or rears are teh wider ones on the cj, but I do recall using CJ shackles on my XJ packs on ole Bounty. Not sure how much that helps, but there it is none the less.

They are supposed to work for the front of a commando. Not sure about yours with the toy leaves though.

Here is something I found on a Google search from the old ORC board.

2 5/8 outer for mount
3 1/4 outer, 2 3/4 inner for spring
Mine are the RE made from 1/4 inch steel for 1.25" lift
Eye to eye is 5"
Not sure what the stock eye to eye is

Maybe that will help.:flipoff2:

Oh, yeah. I seem to remember saying, when you welded those extensions onto your new shackles that they would break...

hmmm... I fogot they were Yota leaves. Can you use matching Yota shackles? I seem to remember they were from an 86-95 model, is that right? If so, I happen to have a stock set leftover.

Can't use Toy shackles... the stock Commando front shackles (just like Wagoneer fronts & late Cherokee rears) are "male" that mounts inside the "female" hanger... as opposed to the CJ style shackles (shackle mounts *outside* both hanger & spring)

Chris, I'll confirm those numbers this evening and see if I can get a set (the 5" eye to eye is *exactly* what I need)... and your right, I knew it was inevitable  Surprised they lasted as long as they did... 3 days of decent wheeling only to break on the "nuisance" section (very twisty, but flat) in 2low... would have pulled the frontend over the rock that got them it if'n I'd been in 4low, but it was so tight I was doing 40 point turns the entire time locked in...

Unless somebody has one laying around?

I have some waggy shackles I can sell you.

I need 5" eye-to-eye

I am using a set of stock XJ shackles on the front of my Sami as part of my missing links I built. They are 3-1/8" eye to eye. Some "lift" ones might give you the right eye to eye length. You could always pick up a stock set and weld on some extensions and beef them up using trailer shackles from Northern.

Yep, I checked this morning and the stock ones are about 3 1/8" eye to eye. That would make an 1.25" shackle about 5" eye to eye.

Dave, let me know if you need a set of lift shackles, I can get them to you for $73 (+ the ride)

Dave, i can't recall the shackle hanger on the frame, but couldn't you cut 'em off and put on some CJ style hanger and shackle? At least then you have more parts availability, and if need be they are easier to fab up yourself.

Then again, if your shackles lasted for 35 years, why change what seems to work.
