Cherokee wont disengage

Got a 1990 Cherokee auto 4.0 and when ever you try and disengage 4wd it takes 10 miles or so and then it pops and finally disengages. Any ideas???

Shift linkage binding, would be the first thing I'd check.

mine would do that, shift linkage binding, it helps to back up as you disengage 4wd.
