I just got a d60 for my Jeep and I want to get a mini spool. Does any one know what the spline would be? this was from a 85 CUCV

Should be 35-spine inner shafts (and carrier) and 30-spline outers (and hubs).

Spline Count

Chevy Dana 60 fronts have 35 spline inner shafts and 30 spline outer shafts

The outer shafts are easily upgradable to 35 spline shafts with stock Dana 70 or aftermarket shafts that vary using different grades of steel (and $ price $)

Keep in mind if you upgrade the outters, you need to change the lockout hubs or drive flanges.

Hope this Helps

Why would you want a spool for the front? Lock-rights / Aussie lockers (Does aussie make a D60 yet?) aren't that pricy and are plenty strong...

Aussies aren't yet available. If you get a lock right, go ahead and order some spare pins and springs with it.

sure beats blowing the side gears out of a detroit... especially at $8 for the kit

Can't argue with that, been down that road. Was so frustrated w/ detroit I was going to rip it out and put in a lock right(or aussie that's how I know they aren't avail.), but found the part for the detroit for $117 shipped to me.

For right now it is a $$ issue and mini spools are Cheap. this will only be a trail rig

I not that Cheap

Why not? If it *must* be locked now, I'd save the money you would spend on a mini-spool and weld it instead. Then that mini-spool money is saved towards affording a Lock-right. No functional difference between a mini-spool and welded spiders, as long as you weld them up good, right?

My front 60 is welded and I've had no problems. Weld it then use the money u saved to go to tractor supply and get a ram for hydro assist. DatSum Bitch wiel pull like u wont beleeve wit fower tyres spinnan! :flipoff2:

Have you actually broken a lockright in a front 60? I've run one for quite sometime and haven't,I've broken a 35 spline hub, an outter, but never the lockright. When I was debating on putting on in I asked on PBB and no one could produce or vouch for a broken one in a 60. Not busting you balls, just curious.

I've never ran a lockright in my 60, but I have run them in a 30, 35, 44, and 8.8, and sheared the pins in all of them, more than once. Never hurt any other part of it though. Replacing pins is nothing difficult, just more of a pain to do on the trail. Went with a detroit for what I thought was a bulletproof setup, learned the hard way thats not the case.

yea why pay for a mini spool when you can make your own by just welding the spiders to eachother, not to the carrier

I broke the pins in my front LR (Land Cruiser 8.875") once.. and the end result was that it stayed locked.. I can deal with that kind of failure. No need to change it on the trail.

Scott F. runs a LR in the front of his '84 on 42's, hasn't broken it, and though he's typically a technical driver, he does lay the skinny when needed.

Sorry for starting the hijack Carl...

I have run a lock rite in the rear 44 of my street /trail CJ with a 401 and tires ranging from 33's to 38's over the years, no failures. I have run lock rites in Dana 30's, AMC M20's, Dana 60's with no failures. I have installed lock rites in over 50 vehicles, several of wich see either regular highway usage or trail usage. Not a single one has failed.
Prior to this I have broken 5 detriots in similar applications.
I am in no way gentle with my stuff having broken several , joints, axles, drive shafts and engines during the same time.
I think I'll keep on recomending lock rites.

If I knew what I know now about Detroits, I'd be running a lockright. Lock right work well and are comparatively cheap. Not trying to stir everyone up, just pointing out replacement pins are less than $10, worth having a set with you when you are a few hundred miles from home. For some reason, I've had trouble shearing pins, sometimes it won't disengage, but other times it can leave that axle useless. Sorry about the hijack.

I'll agree I've blown them up in a 30 and a 44....just never a 60. Jim ran one in his cab truck on 44's with a big hp motor and never broke it.

Detroit

I will never buy another Detroit. I have exploded three of them when axles breaK. They did warranty the last one, other wise I wouldn't have one now. Their customer service is no existant.

Back to topic... another vote for welding it for low budget

Its not a matter of being "CHEAP", but a matter of end result. There are comp rigs that run welded diffs. I've ran a welded diff on the street and never had a problem
