I have an 87 350 with the standard alternator that is commonly converted to one wire. To the best of my knowledge it works ok as it is.

The main charge wire is hooked up.

There is a white wire hooked up at the terminal farther from the main charge wire.

There is a blue wire that at one time went to the terminal between the other two but has been taped out of the way.

What is the purpose of this blue wire and why would someone remove it?

Is it for the charge light?

There is some good info in the article Ron posted... But, If you are on a tight budget you can take the 10 or 12 si series GM alternator and make it a simple, functional 1 wire deal. There are no real negative issues by doing it this way. Loop the 2 wire plug on the top (side facing the fender) from one terminal to the other. (Side by side). Run the charge wire off the back to your batt with a heavy wire. You will have to rev the motor up to 1000-1300 rpms before it excites the field and it starts charging. After that you will continure to charge and the regulator will work as it should. We have wired race cars this way for years and it works well. There is no provision for a charge light, but I bet there is a way to do that.
