Chevy autotrac transfer case

I have a 98 suburban 4wd. It has a transfer case that is electronic with buttons on the dash. It has buttons for 2hi, 2lo and auto4wd.

I believe this is a NVG246 tc, am I correct?

The same tc without auto4wd would be a NVG243 right?

Would a 243 be able to be used instead of a 246?

Is there something distinctive about the 98 models that only work in 98 models?

Can I replace it with a later model and it still work?
