I'm looking at a 68 chevy one ton truck that my brother has and wondering what kind of axle this is. It's 8 lug 2 wheel drive. The diff cover has 10 bolts in it and the cover is very round. The suspension is coil with a leaf overload. It appears to be factory as best as I can tell. More of a toyota guy myself so not sure what I'm looking at.

Not trying to be vague, just dont recall too many details. Just wondering if this axle might be worth keeping around. If you need a specific detail let me know and I'll try to swing by and look at it. Hoping some of you chevy guys might know what GM put in these trucks. Thanks, Brian

Sounds like an Eaton rear axle.

overall not a bad axle, but parts are relatively rare and not cheap.

Sounds like its not something worth pulling out of the truck and holding on to. Even if I wanted parts for it, any idea where I would start?

I am not an expert on the Eaton rear axle, but I'll list a few pros and cons as I understand them. Some of these might be incorrect.

Pros:
- Sheetmetal housing - easy to weld four link tabs to and easy to shave the bottom of for more clearance
- 14 Bolt detroit will install in the carrier and then you can use 14 bolt axle shafts
- Probably lighter than a 14 bolt

Cons:
- Aftermarket gears not available (I think) so you are stuck with whatever ratio you have. I believe they came with at least two different ratios, 4.56 and 5.??.
- I believe they have weaker course spline axle shafts from the factory.
