my sister cavalier wont start guy told us it was the fuel pump but the motor spins over very freely any way to check to c if it is fuel pump you can here the pump come on when the switch is turned on

If you can get to the fuel tank hit it with a hammer(don't beat the mess out of it, just enough to jar it) while someone spins it over. If it starts while doing that its def the fuel pump. That's probably the easiest way.

If he can here the fuel pump--- good chance she's working...............:flipoff2: Damn ace Toyota mechanics always looking for a reason to beat on shit w/ hammers
spark, fuel, air, compresion---- creates fire fire=combustion engine. lets assume you have air.........does she have spark, crack a fuel line at injector rail check for fuel pressure, if it sprays you in the face your good. If you have fuel and spark, try startting it on ether. Starts on ehter and your sure it has fuel pressure, injectors arent firing, time to take it to a mechanic not the one that said fuel pump. if no spark hook up scanner check for RPM signal, no rpm signal crank sensor is probably bad. If it has spark, fuel, rpm signal, check the compression, and or timing belt i think these things have timing belts, belt could have jumped or broke, but either would obviously show up in a compresion test. Or a bunch of other stuff but here are some peliminary basics. if you get past these some actual hard core diagnostics will have to occur.

cavaliers have a timing chain, not a belt. I worked on one before. it wouldnt start and after tearing into it the timing chain tensioner had broke allowing it to jump time. these tensioners have a plastic guide that the chain slides over. go figure that they wear out and break. hopefully this isnt your problem.

^ all cavaliers?
Hell they made those cars a looong time with a few different motors.

As usual though Chase is all over it.

it does have fire and you can hear the fuel pump come on when the switch is turned on but we cracked the fuel line there was no pressure we tried sprayin starting fulid and it wouldnt hit a lick.

Fuel Filter maybe? Not likely to happen all of a sudden, but would explain a working pump but low fuel pressure.

If it won't hit with ether in there, it doesn't sound (to me) like you're really getting spark.
