Cj 5 fuel tank

Ok so I have my cj5 up and running finally and have taken it out 3 times. Aparantly I didn't clean out the fuel tank enough bc now I'm having some fuel issues. Amc 360 with mechanical fuel pump and edelbrock 650 cfm carb. I have fuel from the pump but jeep starts up and skips, than dies out. When I pulled the supply hose from the pump to the filter fuel is orange colored like rust. How do I clean the tank so I can prevent this from happening again and can I pull the carb and clean it up or do I have to rebuild it?

You could drop the tank and do the old solvent and chain "shake" and try to get out all the scale and rust. This method still wont insure 100% success. I would just install a brand new tank. Rock Auto has them for $77.79.

I second the new tank for $78. You would want to seal it after the chain shake, and would have more than $78 worth of aggravation in it.

Thanks guys didn't realize tanks were that cheap. What about the carb?

I would just break the carb down, clean everything good and reassemble it. Probably some trash in there from the tank.

That's what I was thinking. It's only spraying fuel from 1 side. I tried sticking my hand over it to see if I could get whatever it was free but no luck. Do I need a rebuild kit or can I reuse everything?

If the carb is old it would hurt to put in fresh parts as you re-assemble it. If the carb is new or newish I would just put it back together as is if everything looked good.
