I have an '80 CJ7 with 304, t176, d300, d30, amc 20, 5" lift and 35x12.50r15's.
I have to give it a good bit amount of gas to get going from a standstill, but can run 65 on he highway without giving it hardly any gas at all.
Using the turn the tire and count drive shaft method, it appears that i have 3.08 gears. I'm thinking this is the problem.
What gears do ya'll recommend? I'm not going to be doing any hardcore wheeling and still want to be able to keep up with the traffic on the highway without spinning too high rpms.
I don't think i want to tackle a re-gear, can anyone recommend a shop to do this in the Apex/Raleigh area?
I think i should upgrade to 1 piece axles at the same time, any other upgrades i should look at?
Thanks in advance

I would recomend 4.10's with 35's and primarrily street use. You could probably get by with 3.73's but if I were going to go to the trouble I'd go 4.10.
3.73's would probably be easier to find a good set of used gears for the front which I would also do without hesitation for a limited 4wd use Jeep.
If I were closer I would be glad to help you out but there are some very capable people closer to you.

I appreciate the advice. I would like to make some trips to uhwarrie and the beach, will 4.10's be sufficient for both scenarios and the trip driving to and from?
From what I understand, i can upgrade the 20 with my current carrier to a 4.10, but i'd need a new carrier for the dana 30, is this correct?

Just realized that I should have but this in the axle/suspension/tire section, can it be moved?

Yes, They should do fine on the highway with 35's and be suffecient for places like uwharrie with the 2.63 low range in your transfercase.
If you get to the point that you need lower gears for the trail there is always the 4to 1 kits for the transfer case.
Yes a 3 series model 20 carrier will accept 4.10's but the carrier split on a Dana 30 is 3.73 and 4.10.
