CJ power steering box leaking

My power steering box on my 81 CJ is leaking just behind where the shaft bolts to it . Is this a hard seal to replace ? Can it be done with the box mounted on the jeep ? ( grill and fenders are off the jeep ) Where would find a replacement seal ? Or should I just look for a another steering box ?

there are rebuild kits available, but if there is any play anywhere in the steering box i would replace the whole box

I was gonna try and replace that seal on mine, but when I started disassembling it, balls, springs and shims ended up everywhere. I returned the rebuild kit to NAPA and left with a rebuilt box.

The seal behind the shaft is a piece of cake to replace. I pulled the box off of my jeep, it just seemed easier. I had a problem finding the right seal for mine though. I think I ended up getting one for a 75 cj with ps to get the right size. If this is the only problem with your box then I would def. replace it.

Oh and when you ask at the parts counter just ask for an input shaft seal. They are relatively cheap.
