Thoughts on the repairability of this......brother in law has a cj, I am looking for one, well cared for except for the few rust spots, I know I cant find a perfect one, but just cant get this out of my head, I've never had one of my jeeps with rust issues.....thanks for the thoughts..

That tub isn't looking real good. If the price is smokin, I'd consider it. Floor pans can be replaced with some work, but I'd be concerned about the frame. Check closely at the rear spring hangars. Don't walk away from a deal, but make sure what you're buying can be repaired.

A rust tub can easily be fixed with a YJ tub swap. Like said above definitely check out the frame, especially around the rear spring hangers. I wouldn't let a rusty tub scare me away if the rest was sound and the price was right

he is what I am looking at
86 CJ-7
inline, auto-choke, runs great, cared for
no power steering, steering is sloppy
2 soft tops, full steel doors, hard top, soft or half doors too, not sure which..
rust exterior spots here and there......

this rust on the tub is at the body mount just in front of the rear tire, they are both like this on either side, and the roll bar mount typical area has some rust too. I did not see any fram rust was all tub rust I believe.

he is family and really particular about his stuff, hes owned it 2 years or so, and I would have paid the 5000 he wanted if it was not for those rust spots...just made me nervous.

So now what so you think, worth the risk

The rear spring hangers "look" OK from what is shown in the pics, but be sure to inspect closely, this is a common rust area. Also check the rear shackle hanger frame area. Rust usually first develops inboard, where the frame is next to the gas tank.

with that kinda rust, it's not anywhere near worth 5K! More like $1K maybe. If the frame is OK, then best fix easiest and cheapest would to do a YJ swap

thanks guess I needed to just have someone tell me its not worth it...I don;t think I would sleep well at night if I gave 5k, maybe 4k, but he is not going that low.

once I have hit this 5k money mark of savings I start even thinking TJ, but I am trying to suppress those thoughts as best I can.

just went an looked at another cj, wants 6800 and its been rode hard...rust on same spots just as bad or worse....still has valid uwharrie sticker on it.....I love it but...my brother in laws, with no valve leaks, and 3 tops for 4800 even with rust is starting to look better..
