DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY IDEAS OF WHAT I COULD DO ABOUT THE PLAY IN THE STEERING ON A LATE 70'S CJ. I DO HAVE A NEW STEERING STABILZER, AND IT IS POWER STEERING. ARE THERE ANY ADJUSTMENT I COULD DO ON THE STEERING BOX.

on some of the steering boxes, there is a set screw with a jam nut you can tighten up to take out some of the slack in the box. be sure to check the steering shaft frm steering wheel to steering box to make sure there isnt any slack there either.

I've found that a steering box brace running to the passenger side frame rail works wonders. That is after you check for play in all the TREs.

i do need a steering bushing where the shaft connects it has the up and down play in the shaft. don't know if that would effect the play in the steering.

First, get someone to help you and turn the steering wheel back and forth for you. you should be able to see where the play is coming from. some common problems---
the coupler connecting the steering box and the steering shaft is very common to have alot of play. check all of your tie rod ends. the bearing on the bottom of the steering column can also be worn out. also, like fatboy said, there will be a set screw with a jam nut on top of the steering box(accessable through the hole in the crossmember) that will adjust the play in the gear. be sure to do small adjustments and take your time if you adjust the screw. You can mess it up.

Yeah

Get a new steering box mount. The factory one is crap. It might not fix your play, but it is worth doing regardless.
