I got a 79 cj7 with a chevy 350 with a 4" rough country lift and i am having an issue with the steering. It has bump steer you pretty much have to constanly correct the steering every two seconds I am gonna check out the gearbox today but was curious as to if anyone else had any issues with this.

are you sure its bump steer and not loose parts?
I found even with an aftermarket PS steering box bracket, the biggest thing to help tighten up my steering was a brace from the PS box over to the passenger side rail.
Well, the biggest change on mine was getting rid of longer front shackles, going back to stock length. That put the caster back in a good range, and steering was fine, no more darting around.
I still had a little bump steer. If the drag link isnt parrallel with the tie rod, you're gonna have it.

Check the normal things, ball joints, tie rod ends, steering box play, loose brackets, worn bushings, etc. If thats all good try a bit extra negative caster, I genarally try 2degree shims and have had excellant success.

I did the same thing as RenegadeT with my CJ5 I originally had 2" shackles and it darted all over the place. Once I shortened the shackles back to stock it corrected the Castor angle and I could drive it at 75 with no issues.

Well it had some enormous shackles on it. I'm not sure how big they were but I got some different ones they are 1 3/8 I think they are about 3 inches shorter than the other shit that was on there but t still does it with the smaller ones

loose steering box. have somebody turn the steering wheel with the motor running and watch the box jiggle the unhappy dance.
