I have a 76 cj5 that I bought in a thousand pieces. I have been slowly restoring it piece by piece. I have it to the rolling chassis stage and I am starting to think about the tub. When I first bought the jeep I almost tossed the whole thing to get a fiberglass one. It is rotted through in the wheel wells and floors. The underside was rubberized. I would really like to have it repaired/welded/other. It is not attached to the frame yet.

My question- Is there someplace near Raleigh that could sand blast and repair the tub, off the vehicle? Is it even worth doing?

I can't tell you where, but it can be properly fixed. Problem is, it will be extremely expensive to have someone repair it all. Then you will most likely have more come back at some point, Imo. It's all in how much you want to invest and what you want the end result to be. If you don't plan to wheel it, a fiberglass tub may be a decent option. They have their quirks too.

There's a guy in between Raleigh and Durham that does the wet bead blast. I'll have to look him up for you. That's probably your best option for the metal panels. If you strait sandblast you'll most likely end up with a warped up mess.

I'm helping a friend do a 69 cj5. He ended up getting a new metal body from some Asian importer. But we used this guy to do the frame. He's mobile or you can take the panels to him. It might be good to give him a hand to do the job, he was a one man show when we used him and just starting out. O'Toole's Mobile Dustless Blasting
Nice guy.

Do they still make aluminum tubs? I would go that route over fiberglass, depending on the cost of repairing what you have.

Thanks, I'll give him a call.

If yours is really bad, then I would keep an eye out for a used tub in good condition that needs minimal to no repairs.

After just welding in new floor pans in a "decent" 74 CJ5, 12 hours later, still not finished. It all depends on what level you want to take it too. A repair that is up to snuff with factory is very expensive, and you have to find someone who loves jeeps. I do know of a running cj5 304 with just surface rust on the floor pans that could be bought very resonably. Send me a message if you have any questions or want to know more about the other 5.

Got the body in from overseas if your in the Raleigh area and want to look at it, let me know.
