quick question..... i had a 258 and swaped it for 304.... got everything in .. trans bolted up... everything ready to go EXCEPT the clutch linkage that was originally attached when the 258 was in seems to be to short to attach to the transmission by about 1-2 inches.....i used the same tranny from 258 with the 304... did the 304 shift the tranny over 1 -2 inches..... if i was to buy a clutch linkage for the 304 would it be the same length as the one i already have....

thats what i though but i beat and banged to get it over far enough to reach the tranny and it wouldn't
Reach the tranny? The linkage attaches to a bracket that bolts to the front(engine) of the bellhousing. Then there's an adjustable rod that goes to the clutch fork(arm coming out of bellhousing).

What motor mounts did you use?? Frame side and engine side?

when i say tranny i mean the tranny attached to the bell housing....i know exactly where it mounts but the mount and the arm that attaches to the mount arent even touching much less the arm sliding onto the mount

i used the same chasis mounts that were on with the 258 and then the motor mounts off the 304... the driver side casis mount worked fine and the chasis mount on the passenger side i had to drill a hole on the bottom

I do know that you HAVE to use the full motor mounts for the 304- especially the passenger side mount to the frame! There is a huge offset in the difference from side to side on the 304 motor mounts- vs. the rather "even" looking 258 mounts to the frame. IF you used the 258 mounts ( on the frame side of the mount) you will be way off- and thus will never find anything to line up the clutch linkage......I went through the same thing a LOOOOOOOONG time ago- thats the only reason I know about it....lol. Good luck.

Thr drivers side mount ( to the frame) I believe is interchangeable between either motors ( I-6 or ANY Jeep V-8 of the era)- but the passenger side frame to engine mount has to be for a V-8 ( 304, 360, or 401)

/\ /\ What he said!! You must use the V8 frame side mounts to have proper allignment.

thats makes sense---- if i get the 304 passenger chasis mount ( if anyone has one let me know) how do i determine how far up or back to attach it to the chasis

Basically the only difference between the two mounts is the length of it- the V-8 mount will "off-set" the motor to where everything will line up using factory parts ( clutch linkage, etc...) It should be real obvious where the new v-8 mount needs to go, when you are holding the mount in your hand and looking at the frame. The bolt holes will be a dead give away. Good luck- it's getting harder and harder to find the pass mount as everyone scooped them up for AMC v-8 swaps- but I "believe" you can still pick them up at the dealership as a last resort- not for sure- but way back when I was doing CJ's I was able to get one.....

One other quick thing i remembered- IF you haven't already done it- and I am sure you have- you need to swap your engine control modual ( sp?) to the v-8 one- the plugs on the wirring harness are the same- but the modual wont run the V-8 distributor (sp?- it's been a long day! ...LOL!). Another mistake I made and learned along the way- I'm sure This is an issue you have already addressed though.

Did you have a BAD module to begin with? I used [tested, ran & stashed] an '83 F100 V6 module (YES, Ford *DID* briefly offer the V6 in the 1/2 ton line) for a spare harvested from the same donor I snatched the DS II harness from...

Maybe it's a V-block versus Inline that's a problem?

yes the Ford moduals are interchangeable with the AMC ones ( at least most of them in the 80's- but the muduals were different from 6 cyl to 8 cyl- or at least thats what i was lead to believe- that it would not run an 8 cyl disdtributor with a 6 cyl modual.....maybe i did have another problem with mine back then, but thats what the parts guys told me?..... so I swaped my old I-6 one for a V-8 one and had no problems....

i have the motor side mounts... just need the pass. chasis mount

--- yea i did away with the module a long time ago even with the 258.... i think it went bad and so i just got an HEI distr. and bypassed all that wirnig mess
