Need some info!!! I have a 83 cj7 with a 304 and a t18 scout tranny and it has a dana 20 with a twin stick. The thing keeps eating starters. I have tried different brands but no luck. If you have any suggestions let me know.

Thanks Steven

What part is getting "eat"
That starter grounds through the block. I would make sure I had good ground from the block to the battery. Also, need to use a good heavy Gage cable, in good condition,
to the starter from the solenoid, and from the solenoid to the battery. If it sounds good to begin with flywheel shouldn't be an issue. Something else you may want to do is change fluid in the transmission and t case. Pushing the clutch in when you crank it will defiantly cut down on the load. Esp when it's real cold outside.

The ring gear is good. I'm going to change the silenoid and clean the cables. The fluid is pretty clean I put a clutch in a few months ago. I was thinking the silenoid could be letting it get hot. The ditributor went out about a month ago and while diagnose the problem the silenoid was smoking. The end of the starters are eat up on the end like the bendoux is barly catching the flywheel or not disengaging, I'm going to put on a new starter and silenoid tomorrow weather permitting. I'll see what happens. Thanks for the input.

You dont shim an amc starter, it just bolts in at the correct depth.

While I've never had to shim an AMC starter, I've read of others doing it to eliminate various issues (seems most were due to "mix&match" drivetrain parts, which you seem to have covered :D) and predominately on I-6s.

The last place I saw it was on ORC SWB forum where there were several replies outlining how & why to do it...
