Im just about done putting this rustys offroad 4 inch lift on an 81 Cj7 and I dont believe the shackle is suppose to be in this position. Does anybody else think this is not right, or have any knowledge on how to correct it?

to post the pics just copy the code and paste it here.

yeah thats not looking good, try jacking the axle up to put weight on the springs, that will either push the shackles out or you may have to take them off and put them back out with more weight on the axle. I THINK, its been longgg time since I put lift on my old cj7

I don't know what'cha got going on there, but that's not right. Even unweighted, the shackles shouldn't be inverted like that. Are the fronts and rears the same length? Only thing I can think is that the rears may be shorter and you put them on the front? Just guessing here.

I rode on mine for 2 different trips, and around town with longer shackles to get a better angle keep them off the frame and the springs still haven't settled enough. I even bounced it through URE. They have been on for 2.5 months. I think I'm going to have to relocate the mounts.

I Did the front and than the back and made sure I didnt mix them up, Ive tried putting a pry bar in there and prying it into a more vertical position but it just goes right back. I really want to figure out whats wrong because i ordered the same lift for my CJ and I'm getting greasable shackles with it but I dont know if maybe i need to get a little bit longer shackle?? IDK this ones got me

was it sittin on the ground when you took that pic? ...if so, looks like you have the wrong springs up front.

CJ fronts are shorter than the rears , but I think it's only by 1 1/2 " ...not 4 1/2" (which it what that looks like)

Hope that helps
Steve

My shackles did the exact same thing when I first started wheeling but only did it when flexed real hard. I built a set of shackles myself about 1/2'' longer than stock and they haven't inverted since.

you may have to pull a spring out of the pack until they get broken in. Once they get broken in they will flatten out and get longer.

i had this problem also. i went ahead and moved the spring hangers that are welded to the frame. it flexed and rode better, plus it stretched my wheelbase about 3 inches total.

1976-1986 CJs:

Front and rear shackles are the same LENGTH.

Rear springs are 2.5" wide, fronts are 2" wide. Kinda hard to mix up.

Front shackles hangers are bolted on correctly, ---O.

THAT IS NOT RIGHT. I wouldn't drive it that way, no room for suspension flex. You will likely break the front spring hanger.

Personally I've never been a fan of 4" lift springs on a CJ. 2.5"-3" springs, SLIGHTLY longer shackles, a small body lift, front tube fenders and rear fender trimming/TJ flares will give room for 35s.
