cj7 problem PLEASe helP

i have an 81 cj7 inline 6... just put a brandnew clutch in two days ago, trans back on ready to go..... heres the problem with the trans in gear the back tires when roll all day long and not turn the engine at all... .you know how you put a vechile in gear when parked so it dont roll..... mine rolls.... i aint the most experienced mechanic either so it might be something obvious idk ..... anything responses will help please

problem # 2= when i try and start the jeep it will start and fire but the i can go and try it again an it will make this horrible knock from the starter/ flywheel..... kind of like the starter is trying to walk up the flywheel rather than spin it..... is it the starter or the flywheel or other

problem #1 check to make sure the t-case is not in Neutral

problem #2 is tough to web diagnose...a loud knock? or heinous grinding?
 
what do you mean try it a second time? may sound stupid but are you trying to crank it while its still running. if not I bet its a loose starter like ray said
 
ok prob. #1 t case is in 2 wheel drive, tranny in first gear ,, tires still spin, drive shafts hooked up yes..... also it started doin this weird thing like when the engine is idling ( back tires are on jack stands) the tire will spinn slowly with tranny in neutral, might be related might not....

#2 its like the engine can't turn over kind of locked up... it will crank run idle then ill turn it off next time i crank it it will make that knockin noise and like lock up which kind of makes me thing its just one positon on the flywheel is bad but i hope its the starter, i just put the tranny back on don't wont to take it off again
 
did you change clutch and pressure plate?
Change thee throw out bearing while you were in there?

Im not even guessin at #2 because I dont fully understand what you are saying.
but if in gear you can turn the tires which turns the dshaft and the tranny but the engine does not turn then the engine/tranny are not bonding which is the job of the clutch/pp assembly

add that you just changed it....and Im guessing there
 
did you re surface the flywheel??
also did you replace to pilot bearing or forget it?(it could be in the PP housing flying around)


and with the jeep rolling in gear sounds like the forks arnt putting it in gear
did you remove the shifter/top of the trans??
if so did the forks go back in the right places??

more info plz like which trans so we can get better ideas thx
 
Problem 1....Also one of your hubs on your rear axle could be stripped. Put it in 4x4 and see what happens. If it starts pulling, then you probably have a stripped hub. Cj's are bad for this.

i bought the kit,,, brand new pressure plate, clutch disk, pilot bearing, and release bearing

how important is it to resurface the flywheel...

#2 though the tires are can spin when in gear, when its cranked and on jack stand i ran it all the way through second gear which mean that all the lingage seems to be right

trailjeepman mght be on to something, try it in 4x4, see if the front pulls.

I think someone was asking if you resurfaced the flywheel, to see if you pulled it off....maybe it didnt get re-installed correctly?

Did you successfully get the old pilot bushing out? Put the new one in? Did they measure the same?
 
no i never took the flywheel off, yes i got the old pilot bushing out, put one exactly the same measure in it


what i was trying to say,, with the jeep turned off and in gear the back tires can spin... but when cranked it runs fine... why wouldn't it be catching when turned off
 
ok i figured it out.... DUH lol the tires will spin freely if on jack staand.. not actually turning to drive shaft

the answer to problem #1... i dont know what was the problem but the problem now is the engine is seize up( ran yesterday locked up today). took tranny off, engine wouldn't turn at alll.... sucks... pulling engine tomrrow thanks for all the help
