I have an 83 cj7 originally with a 4 banger. It now has a 304 with T19 from a scout and a dana 20 transfer case. I am running out of options. It keeps eating up starters with in a few starts a bad grinding noise. I have shimmed it. I have tried different brands. The ring gear looks good. I installed a new silenoid do you think the silenoid could be fring the internals. I put one on after new years and it lasted 4 months. I changed the silenoid and new starter I am on my 3RD starter in a week. Any answers? Should I try a new fly wheel? The bottom hole in the bell housing is stripped but I can put a 5/16 bolt through it and tighten it down I dont think that should matter. Please help!!!!!!!!!!!! I was looking on ebay the silenoid for a 76-77 cj has 3 prongs and mine has 4 does anyone think that matters. I think the engine is from 70's. Please Help with any info.

Grinding sound is probably from poor engagement of the starter bendix and the fly wheel. Have you turned the engine over by hand and looked at all the ring gear? The solenoid shouldnt be a problem unless its sticking and keeping the starter engaged after you let off the key. Shimmed the starter on an AMC?
