Who on here has their CDLs? My church is getting a larger van/bus and wants me to get mine so that I can drive it. They are going to pay for my class c CDL, but how difficult would it be to go up a step and get class B? I dont really need class b, but it cant hurt to have it. How difficult is getting a class c/b and what all is needed?
For the Class B, you have to have access to a vehicle with a certain GVWR (these typically have air brakes). It's then a written test, a pre-trip inspection, and a road test.
Just gave mine up. Got it when they first required CDL for church buses and was grandfathered in. No test. DMV just asked what class, and what endorsements I wanted.
You'll have to road test for whatever class you want. IIRC, without looking it up, I think you'll need a B. I think because they won't do a P endorsementg on a C....they don't differentiate between a little bus and a big bus.
Be careful if y'all tow a trailer with the bus/van....there is some thought that doing so edges i nto full CDL requirements....logbook, records, hours of service. I have a site bookmarked that gives all the details, I will try and remember to post it later.
I’ve got my CDL, nothing to the written test if you can read and comprehend English with any mechanical knowledge whatsoever. The pretrip and road test can be difficult if you get the wrong DMV official. Just watch your speed and remember to use the clutch. Also if you take your road test in an automatic your CDL will be restricted to automatic.
I’d definitely go all out for class A. If you get C or B and later decide you want to get A you’ll have to take all tests all over again.
I had a Class B with the passenger endorsement and air brakes from FL when I drove a bus for Disney, No restrictions due to the bus being an automatic. When I came to NC, they upgraded me to a Class A with passenger when I was changing my license over. I didn't need to take any tests for my CDL but they made me take a motorcycle written test to transfer my motorcycle endorsement.
When I got my motorcycle endorsement years ago it was a couple weeks before Daytona bike week and cold as shit out. I wasn’t thinking about anything other than getting my license so I rode my Harley to the dmv office to take the written exam and to do the ride portion all the same day. After I took the written test the lady said now you have a permit and once it warms up bring a motorcycle back to do the riding test. I said I’m ready now and she said you rode it here today, I said how else would I get a license? She wasn’t very happy at first but then she said if you can ride in this weather you must be able to ride and didn’t even make me do the riding test and just issued me a motorcycle license.
