Classic Vehicle Tax Values Beware

The property tax is due on my '56 Willys truck and I noticed that they had it at $8650.00. It's in poor to fair shape and def not worth that so I called the tax office and the guy says that they now use NADA Classic vehicle appraisals to value old vehicles. He gave me the steps to appeal and I will be doing that today. It's an informal appeal at first so he gave me an email address and told me what to do so will do that today. Usually the tax value is maybe 1/3 of the real value. My 2017 Harley was only valued at $4550.00.
Double check your classic vehicle values...
BTW I'm in Mecklenburg county

This actually has me worried since I just did a guaranteed value insurance with Hagerty for my insurance on the Jeep. It would be hard for me to argue that.
tax law is a different court than insurance court
its as common as the sky is blue
you make a legal tax argument with regard to the taxes. you make legal argument for the insurance for you to be "made whole".
tax value is different than your insured value, because insured value takes into account your abililty to get another, loss, etc.
This is also why your home tax value is way less than your home insurance value (what you bought it for)...

I went through this a few years ago with my FJ55.

Was 'valued' at $5k for a few years.....then 2021 got a bill showing a 'value' of $22k.

Appealed immediately and settled at $9k.

They just do this crap cause most won't appeal. Then moan a few years later that 'revenue' is not enough.

We forget we have the ability to call the shots, we just don't do it....so we get abused.

My 2004 Oshkosh 7-ton dumptruck had a tax value of about $2,500 (engine alone would be worth $8-12k). Needless to say I didn't argue when I registered it. If they only knew what I sold it for, the county would have been rather disappointed with themselves 🙃

Not to mention no one asks why the state is even concerned with the perceived or actual value of your vehicle. A 2015 F150 uses the same roads and infrastructure as a 2023 F150. Why is one taxed more? Crashing a 2015 Mustang into the crowd is gonna call the same fire department and EMS as would be called if a 2023 crashed into a crowd. Why is one taxed more?

Tax= penalty for success. More value the more you pay the gubmint

I think that sounds like discrimination to me! Everyone else gets to shout that, why can't I?

Vehicle taxes are based on the value of the vehicle. So it makes sense that 2015 F150 is less then a 2023. Why it's based on value over usage is weird to me. But hey taxes suck and them people got to justify their job.

I never replied to the "Antique Tags" thread last year because I felt very alone and missing something? Nobody in the entire thread had recognized the benefit of antique tags like I have? I still don't know what I missed in that thread or this one yet either so curiosity wins! LOL Here's my 2 cent finally so hopefully someone fills me in...

Antique tags have saved me probably in the thousands in taxes (since 2004 to be exact) and I never had to appeal since. I thought it was an obvious no brainer especially after it dropped from 35 years to 30 this past year or so. I got my tax statement just last month and it's still a flat $6. In Durham none the less where even your dog gets taxed more than that. Even as I drive it to work every day there you can't argue "occasionally" in court of law anyways unless someone is really dialed in on your a$$. They have worked flawlessly for me.

The only misconception I can see with the older thread and even here is if someone mistook "assessed value" with "taxable amount" or something? If so, you may want to re-read NCGS 105-330.9.

$8,650 value you should see about a $104 tax bill coming up. You would have saved about $98 this year alone. I think the tag itself initially cost me like $30 at DMV so there is that.

But why are taxes tied to any value? Wonder why the voters don't fight back?
Taxes don't just happen.

This is one of the few area Maryland shines. No recurring property tax on vehicles. You pay a pretty hefty "excise tax" when you title it, that's it.
and here you can get Historic tags on anything > 20 years old (yeah, even that 2003 Corolla), cheap tags and there's no inspection. Just can't use it for "daily commuting" but who the heck would even know?

I have asked about Antique registration at DMV and they acted like they had never heard of it. I run old tags on it but I have to have the up to date tag and registration with me at all times.

i created a LLC in a favorable state that has no vehicle taxes, and no excise tax either. I fund the LLC through lease contracts, and 'other' contracts. It purchases the vehicle desired from a bank account in its own name, registers it, and leases it to myself or whomever the driver is for a monthly fee of $10 and other valuable consideration. I spend about $100 a year to keep it registered with an agent, and have a phone answering service. I spent one morning over coffee making a one page website. I spend 0$ on a custom domain email, as I host it myself. In this way I am not exclusively bound by "antique" vehicles only.

The most successful ones are in the politicians pockets and use loopholes that are made for them.

The average buisnessman who has 10 work vehicles and 4 personal vehicles and a boat and some trailers......there are many of these types......why do they put up with it?

not Bill Gates types

who wants to have to form an out of state LLC and keep up with it all, even if its 'cheaper'?4

and driving around with no current reg sticker? you'll eventually get pulled over....who wants the hassle?

seems like combined, tens of thousands of people try to find work arounds and beat/game the system or play the odds....when we allowed the taxes to be enacted upon us.....i just don't get it

Ultimately the gov is gonna do what they want. I’ve been to meetings for local taxes. It’s a “this is what we are gonna do” not a let’s discuss this. It’s done and settled before us minions even hear about it. Unfortunately that’s the way it will always be probably. Same for insurance and utility price hikes.

You ask a lot of good questions as to why people aren't doing anything about it.
I suggest you try and come up with a solution, execute it, and report back to us how it went.
Then you may know the answer to your questions.

Out of date tags are a fix it ticket...like the great warrior poet Marshawn Lynch once said "Oh imma get got, but Imma get mine way mo than I get got tho".
Yep, exactly. I have two legal vehicles. My wife's and my son's because I don't want them to get hassled. Actually, my wife's isn't but she just asked me to get it legal again. Lol. My other 6 cars....nope. One of them has 2013 plates. 🤣

Only thing I have legal is the beater Honda because we got it within the last year. After that it’s gonna be riding dirty too. I got cars with registrations older than my kids. Last time I got popped I called the DA and raised hell and she dropped it without a new registration.
