Our power was out for 4 days w Matthew and we had to empty the freezer/fridge. I noticed the fridge was running almost constantly yesterday, maybe because the freezer is still pretty empty. I cleaned the dust off the coils etc. w a small hose ducktaped to the shop vac hose less than 2 yrs ago but when I checked it yesterday they were covered w dust and dog hair again. I went to HDepot and got this brush set, well worth the price.

GE Universal Appliance Brushes (2-Pack)-PM14X10056DS - The Home Depot

Just having the shop vac hose pointed at the coils and using the brushes they cleaned the coils and the rest of the bottom of the fridge quickly.

When I was in training for appliance repair a lot of refrigerators had the coils on the back without a fan. Then came along frost free and the coil was moved to the bottom with a fan to suck in the dirt from floor. We would just blow out the dirt with some R- 12

Yup, every year or so I clean mine. I bought those same brushes a while back. Also pull the cover and clean the fan blades for the blower; they also get caked with dust and eventually start throwing the fan out of balance.
