Does anyone know if a notary's signature is needed when buying a car with a clear title in NC? Could'nt find it on the DMVs website.

The seller's signature needs to be notarized on the title. Then when you get it re-titled in your name, your signature needs to be notarized on the application; this can be done at the DMV.

errr

Only the seller's signature needs to be notarized.

In the past, I've just filled out the seller's portion and then signed in the prescence of a notary and got it stamped.

ONCE, I had a newbie notary who insisted that the buyer portion be filled in before they'd stamp it. Wouldn't you know it, I screwed that up! lol.

To play it super safe, just have buyer + seller both show up at DMV and let them walk you through it.

At the Ta g office here in Morganton. they will notorize either sig, but both have to be notorized if not done at the same time. I just went through this.

Now that you mention that, that makes sense. Whenever I've been on the buying end of the operation the DMV always wants a notary fee in cash when you show up with the title already signed and notarized by the seller. That must be the fee to notarize the buyer's signature.

From the boards lawyer, both signatures have to be notarized. What the various DMV's do is still up in the air.

This is what happened when I bought my Bronco. Both people had to be present and both sigs needed to be notarized, and both parties had to agree on mileage of the vehicle.

The DMV official is probably notorizing the damage discloure statement, and that's the fee you're paying.

Only old tittles could get away with the seller signing it, and no buyer sig. It changed sometime in the 90's

I think the damage disclosure form is the title, doenst require a notary.
The buyer's sig doesnt need to be notarized anywhere on the title, but it does need to be notorized on the title application.

This is where they get me, its not the DMV, its the b!tch at the DMV counter making money on the side collecting $5 a pop for each title app. she processes.
