Clutch acting odd?

I have not drove a manual in years so I am not sure of all the lingo etc.

This is a 95 YJ, 4 banger with the 5 spd. Noticed for first time couple weeks ago.

Basically if I have it in 1st gear with the clutch pushed in...and leave it there for a bit (like waiting on a light, etc) it seems to 'stick'?

By stick...instead of the clutch releasing up towards the top, it is "as if" the clutch release point has slipped down to the bottom of the pedal...?

As soon as I start moving, it seems to "come back" to normal shifting position and if I slip the car into neutral while waiting on light etc...and then shift into first it acts just fine. (IN that case I am NOT holding the clutch pedal down until ready to go...)

So it only seems to do this when I leave it in gear and hold the clutch for an extended period of time (not trying to engage, clutch pushed down far enough it should not be engaging)

Again...have not drove one in a long time, this maybe common issue, but I don't remember it from years ago?

...had a thought...and I could be way off, not sure what "holds" the clutch out, is there some kind of hydraulic pressure? I have never replaced one so I do not know.

If so it is acting as if the pressure is leaking down if I hold it too long...allowing the clutch to try and reengage despite the fact the pedal has not moved?

Holding the clutch like that is not advisable. Sounds like one of them is going out. Either the master or the slave.

First I would start simple... Flush the fulid and try that. From the way your decribing it, it sounds like a hydro problem. If its only happening when you hold it down that would be my first guess. But what your saying somewhat does not make since. If I'm getting what your saying.. As you hold the clutch down in first gear, the release point is lower to the floor? If thats the case wouldnt that mean you would stall or start to move if you let of the brake since there is friction between the clutch and flywheel?

That is correct, it is slipping and starting to "fight" the brake. With the 4.10 gears it doesn't stall out even without gas unless you really try to so when this happens it can try to start moving you fwd again!

I will be starting off by looking/adding fluid. After that, will look for the "leak" if master or slave or both...that is where it is probably going to be from what I read on here/talked it over with Prev owner.

This is a 3rd car for me so won't be farting with it till back from the beach / early July.

Thx for the help folks, will update this when I fix it, but it sounds as if hydro is losing pressure so the clutch is "releasing" basically if I hold it in for a while. The reason it does not just "cut off" is the 4banger/4.10 is pretty good at not stalling out anyway so...but can be exciting when it wants to start moving fwd into an intersection (wtf?...YANKing stick back to Neutral thank you very much..)

Mine was doing the same thing, turned out the cup in the master cyclinder was bad and it was leaking fluid. Either way, you can only get the master/slave cyclinder as one sealed unit so it ones bad, both turn out bad
