I have a 99 cummins 5 speed pretty much stock other than a edge comp box and few bolt ons. Has a newer clutch in it but I think it's stock hp rated cause if I turn the box up to 4 or 5 it will slip some on higher rpms. My question is would a big single work or go with a dual disk? I've heard the big singles make it hard to tow and are grabby. Most aftermarket clutches go by hp rating. I think stock is rated a 300hp. Would I be alright going with a 450-550 single or just bite the bullet and get a dual disk

They've changed clutch names but Peter used to make a clutch he considered a OFE and it did a very nice job balancing decent power and towing. Might give them a call and see what the equivalent is now.

I have a southbend single in my truck rated for 450hp it does fine in forward a little grabby in reverse but not too bad and ive never had a problem with it slipping. Almost 100k miles on it now and still going strong.

That would be the OFE I was talking about!
Oh ok I didn't know who "Peter" was in your first post.

And Adam I have to add I have used my truck for towing probably 70% of the time the clutch has been in there and it has been holding up great.

My Southbend fucking sucks. Grabby, overheating piece of shit. I'll go back with OEM Mopar if I have to do it again. This is on a 3rd gen that's turned up a bit and tows 17-18k on a regular basis. Maybe you can upgrade to the larger diameter clutch and pressure plate they used on the later trucks (like mine).

My OEM clutch was fine at 150k. Springs were a bit bent (sidestepping the pedal will tend to do that), but it was out, so we figured we'd "upgrade".

Think I'd call south bend and ask for Peter. I've never had any issues like that unless someone selected the wrong clutch for their application! There's always valair, but south bend has stood behind my clutches when it was obviously operator abuse lol.

Yeah mine tows regularly also and I've never had any problems out of it, it has even held up to a couple pulls in front of a sled. The clutch I got did upgrade to the larger diameter like used on the 6spds but still kept the 5spd input shaft size the same so I didn't have to buy the larger 6spd input. If your having that much trouble I would have already called southbend about it.

That is the one that is in my old 7.3. I drove it like a dumbass and it held up great. Current owner is still daily driving it as a work truck and towing all the time. Probably 90k on it at this point and still going strong.

Yea I was planning on going with a 450hp clitch from what I've read they don't seem to be to grabby. Ive had a feel dual disk and hated them the older ones sounded like hell to lol. I used to be able to slip my dual disk in my 07 but a 2nd gen don't make much power compared to what all I had done to it.

What all is done to ur truck performance wise? Stock clutchs are rated at 300hp the edge drag comp box is supposed to add around 16hp then I got a few more goodys so a 450hp clutch might be pushing it for me

I've always run a Valair clutch in my K30 (Cummins/NV4500). I smoked the first one and it was entirely my fault. You're not supposed to sled pull with a single disc....who knew? :D I went with a higher HP rating on a single disc as a replacement, but I wish I had went ahead and done a dual disc while everything was apart. Never owned a South Bend.

I've made over 700 on a ofe and abused it but didn't expect a long life. it lasted longer than I would have expected! Valair is a fine clutch. I just always liked working with the folks at southbend! The new street dual disc are pretty quite and have acceptable manners. Not a single disc but not as bad as some of the original dual disc.

When I had the tranny out of my 07 I called south bend to order a new pilot bearing and throw out bearing. Figures id replace while I was in there. Only had about 30k on the clutch at the time and no problems. Peter asked why I had it out and I told him I had a lot of noise and it ended up being a bad front bearing in the tranny. He told me he had a new dual disk design that was quieter and sent the new clutch to me with the other parts I ordered for free. Didn't even add any $ to the shipping cost or ask for a proof of purchase.

South Bend has the best customer service of any company I deal with. Peter is the one to talk to. If you're questioning which clutch to go with, give Peter a call and he will give you his expert opinion. A 13" OFE single disc is pretty smooth. I've seen first hand the abuse one will take in a silver 2nd gen @mysterync. I would go with an organic dual disc before going to an FE single disc. It will be a lot smoother. The FE is too grabby for me. Give me a call if you have any questions.

@shawn give me a call tomorrow about your clutch

Call Dan at Valair. I have had a organic dual disk in my truck for 4 years and no problems yet. It has done everything from plowing snow to daily driving and towing. I have NO complaints

I'm a big fan of Valair too. Good people, great product, and great service. As stated give Dan a call and tell him what you want to do with the truck and he will set you up good. I went with a dual disc organic and its a great all around driver clutch and heavy towing (26k regularly) clutch.
