Clutch hydraulic problems

Pushed the clutch in the other morning and turned the key and the jeep just about jumped through the garage door.

Called the dealer for a part number on the slave cylinder and they say that they have an "assembly" that includes the master and the slave with all the hose and stuff already connected for ~$250. Found just the slave for ~$55 minus shipping on the net.

Has anyone had their slave go out on them and replaced just the slave? Is it better to go ahead and replace the whole assembly? I've found it online for about half the $250 but I always hated having parts shipped. Jeep is a 97tj.
 
If you knew 100% for sure it was the slave leaking (and not a fitting into it, or the line itself), then there's no reason to replace the whole assembly.

That said, $130 ain't too bad if you're not 100% sure.

I hate waiting for shipping too, but it's all part of the game
 
Autozone has the slave for 60$?
Carquest prolly about the same and since their DC is out in Millbrook, they'll have it in stock?

As for replacing just the slave, I have, but only cause the random clutch kit had one with it when I replaced all the other clutch bits in a buddies jeep?
 
Ive had this happen on vehicles before after sitting for several weeks. For me it has been the disc rusted to the pressure plate, or something else rusted and jammed. You may want to check into that before you throw money at it.
 
I am not sure how the system on your TJ is, but on my 01 dodge you have to replace everything. I bought just a slave to replace my old one only to find out there is no way to bleed the system. I got a new assembly from the dodge dealer that bolted right in and already had fluid in it, no bleeding required. You may want to check into it and see if there is even a way to bleed the system before you purchase anything.
 
I removed the slave and fluid came out of the boot. I'm leaning toward replacing the whole thing if I can find one priced right even if I have to order it.
 
Decide to go with the genuine Mopar part. When I removed the master the actuating rod fell out so I feel better about getting both. My wallet is $271 lighter but it was in stock and I feel better about the fact that it is not a cheap imitation. It came complete with fluid that was already bled. All I had to do was drop the slave down from the top and arrange the line then connect the 2 mounting bolts on each (slave and master) then the connecting rod and clutch switch. Took all of 30 minutes. FYI, when installing the slave on the tranny make sure the actuating rod that engages the fork rest in the spot made for it. From reading on the net, it''s a pain if you miss and it drops down inside the bellhousing.
