The wife and I joined some friends from GA TTORA on their run this past weekend. I hadn't been out to Coal Creek in about 6 years, I forgot how huge it is! We had a good time, it was a slippery wheeling trip with the trails being either super slick mud or covered in ice and snow... Good times! Here's a few pictures:

Trail 42 - this one was interesting. I think there is some confusion on the map as to whether this an ATV trail or not. Either way, it was sketchy. Thankfully, only myself and one other vehicle were committed to it before we realized it was more than the others in our group could/would want to tackle.

Trail 43 - This was the only way down from trail 42, as there was no way we were making back out the way we came. I hate how pictures make stuff look so easy... :shaking:

Were doing a ride there later this year, i'm really looking forward to it. I've heard it's a blast over there.

I went with my local club this past June and had a blast. Looks a LOT different with snow. Looks like a great time!

It was a good time... I've wheeled in the mud a good bit, but I can't remember a place that was more slippery. I'm sure the recent snow melt helped that along quite a bit. We also ran trail 16 and some of 4 I believe. Trail 16 was quite long, but is a nice winding drive through the woods with some slick hill climbs thrown in for fun.

Looks like a blast... Definately going to look into planning a trip there.

what is it like having to get off the trails at dusk? isn't wind rock / coal creek the place where they do not allow night wheeling?

Yep, they say the area is restricted to daylight hours in the rules... It kinda sucks, but at the same time we didn't think about it too much. We were pretty well beat by dark anyway, so it's no big deal to be headed back to camp at dusk. That place is big and confusing enough in the daylight, navigation would be even harder in the dark.

Since it's fresh in your mind, what trails would you say are your favs or some you'd recommend for somebody running 36-38's? I've been planning on making it up there sometime this year and would like to make the most of a weekend trip.

If your running 36's-38's and are confident in your drivetrain try Rattle Rock Trail. Youtube/Google it. My wife and I used to go to Windrock before we moved to NC. It's a great place to wheel and you can find EVERYTHING your looking for there. Waterfalls, hill climbs, mud, rocks, level trail.....or Rattle Rock. Travel in a pack when you there and pay close attn to your directions. Last trip we went, it was a group of 4...and we still got lost. The trails aren't marked for shit

We really didn't get to run a whole lot.

The first day we did trail 15 right away. I highly recommend it, it's short but fun. I didn't have any trouble with it, I'm locked front and rear SOA on 37" IROKs. From 15 we kind of just cruised around on some of the "moderate" trails, I don't recall the numbers but I do know that I would rate them as easy. Sorry, I know that's not much help. One of the ones that sticks out is the short trail 42, I believe it's classified as difficult, it's black on the map. It took some winching to get myself and another rig through it, but I wouldn't call it a good trail, more of just a pain. It was very snowy, so I'm sure that contributed to the winching. From there we were pretty much forced to go down trail 43. I definitely did not like that, it's quite steep and slick enough that I had absolutely no control...

The second day was spent on trail 4 and 16. They are nice little drives through the woods, and 16 has some good creek bed, but they aren't anything challenging. That place is huge, it'll take several trips to see all of it.

We went and looked at Rattle Rock, looks pretty intense to me. I'm a fairly conservative wheeler, and it's probably more than I'd want to run...

Like others have said here and in other threads, you should definitely get the map, and/or ride with a group that knows where to go and what trails to hit. You could easily spend most of your time on gravel roads lost if you weren't paying attention.

It really depends on what you want. My group likes to actually ride so rattlerock is not our choice. We always like running 15 which after you go through a big hole stay to the right. THat takes up to a big flat spot on the top of the mountain. Turn left out of there and take your first right. That is what they call little mule. It is a very steep decent and right back up again. Turn left at the top of that and you drive right past the bottom of rattle rock and out to the gravel road up a fun little climb. If nobody breaks or rolls and knows how to use the throttle you can run all of it in an hour. But that hardly ever happens. 22 i think it is right out of the parking lot is fun too. 3 and 39 are also fun. Last time we went a few weeks ago we ran rail trail backwards. Started on 3 where the coal pile was and went down RT it was a blast.

Thanks everyone, I figured since you guys have been you could save us some time going down just plain old service roads and such. I take it RattleRock is those in the pics BLACKXJ posted?

rattlerock is super fun. it can be an hour or 9hrs. depends on the day!

Love good ole' windrock. I have run rattle rock in 15 mins from top to bottom and been there as long as 10 hours.

Got to sample Little Mule on my 3rd trip there. Appears they did some "grading" there beforehand... still a pucker angle (and drop off) for lesser modified rigs!

Started on 3 where the coal pile was and went down RT it was a blast.

Would like to try that... we ran out by the steps/pinch :D
