Cobra on the loose in Raleigh

Here is one for you. Back in 1990-91 I was living in an apt in North Raleigh. It was the middle of the summer and my from college room mate had opened the balcony door and windows at some point in the morning. We had a first floor apt. Well I woke up around noon because I had been bouncing at a college bar the night before and didnt get in bed till around 4am. I go in the kitchen a find a 15 ft long Boa Constrictor wrapped up and over the fridge and laying across the stove. I am not afraid of snakes thank goodness but WTF? I call animal control and they come and get it. They tell me it had been reported missing. Apparently it belonged to some pot heads across the street and they got stoned and passed out. Snake slithered out of their place across the street and into our apt.

You just need to hold it, snuggle it, and sqeeze it, just like a bunny, or shoot everything that moves and a few things that don't!

Man, this is a crazy story. My Father in law used to breed boas. I have always been deathly afraid of snakes, so you can imagine the first time I met my in laws, of coarse he takes me upstairs to his snake room. This dude had the entire room lined with cages from floor to ceiling all filled with snakes. Now, I know Boas aren't venomous, but they will wrap themselves around you quick and stuff to constrict. I can't tell you how many times he was bitten and constricted and had a hell of a time getting them to uncoil. He made really good money from breeding these boas and was the 4th person in the world to hatch a Sunglow boa, which is pretty cool I guess.

Needless to say, I had a hard time being at there house the first couple of times I was there.
I've heard their bites hurt like shit too. We had this snake dude come to a youth group thing once and he had this gigantic boa or burmese python or some thing. I can't remember, but it was huge. All the kids were holding it and the guy was all loose and cheery and all, then I walk over and the snake catches a look at me and stops and lifts his head and starts looking at me. The dude gets all tense and is like "back...away.....slowly....."

I guess for some reason the snake didn't like me and was really close to striking at me.

Yeah those things are no joke. Just about every time he would get done doing whatever snake people do, he would always come out of the room with blood running down his arm and bruises where the snakes would wrap around his arm and would have to fight to get them off. I just knew one day, someone was gonna find him with a boa wrapped around his neck, and I ain't talking about the feathered kind.

Does he still have snakes? Cause if he did, there is no way in hell I'd let my kid be in that house out of my arms reach.

Nah, he got rid of everything about 8-10 years ago. He was working full time and coming home and doing the snake thing for 3-4 hours every night and just got to be too much. He apparently made a killing while breeding and shipping snakes, but was taking a toll on him.

Some guy I used to work with said the same thing. Evidently, if you can make a new or funky pattern of boa you can make big money. I'm not a snake person. Never have been. I'm not going to go screaming and running when I see one but I use the same philosophy I use with people. You do your thing and I'll do mine. If you can stand the damn things there's money to be made.

Yeah, If I'm not mistaken, one of those sunglow boas when he first bred them were going for 15k+

Yea I used to have a customer who was all big into breeding boas …. I remember him having a few different rare ones he’d talk about. Like playing the lottery…if they had (I don’t know how many is normal) normal “rate” snakes they were 5-700/each. But if the stars aligned 10k plus.
I just remember him bitching about GA confiscating a tote of his snakes before some show in Atlanta and he said he lost 200k…

apparently it’s a grey area legally - legal to own and keep but not sell- but the juice was worth the squeeze

Yeah seems like I remember my Father in Law shipping snakes illegally. I can't remember how he did it, I just remember one time, driving over to the airport and meeting some guy at a loading dock... I think I remember him saying that Boas would have 5-8 babies ( and I think they are live births and not in eggs???) and it was literally a crap shoot. He might go through 20-30 snakes before getting something good. Looking back, I thought it was F'n weird but now that I'm older, I realized he did it because he enjoyed it and he made a hell of a lot of money doing it.

Soooooo ..... my wife told me yesterday the zebra monster zombie cobra snake thingie owner fessed up to the snake being on the loose SINCE FREAKIN' NOVEMBER!
So that things been wandering around 8 months!

 "Clearly, he's stressed." Not because he's had a dangerous snake on the loose since November, but because now he's been charged.
