Cold morning diesel blues

Today was the first really cold day on which I've had the 01 CTD. The brakes are connected in with the PS on this guy. This morning I let the grid heater cycle, and started it up to what sounded like power steering whine. Every time I'd touch the brakes or turn the steering it'd whine. Was this just because it was 19 degree's outside? Or does that sound like something isn't right?

And yes, I am up this late. We were let go early from campout for ncsu/carolina tickets.

Check your P/S fluid. It may be low. If not does it look dirty? Maybe need to be flushed. How many miles? If over 100k then you should consider a new pump.

every cummins truck i have does that. it sounds terrible but i have never had any adverse affect from it. just let it warm up plenty

My old truck used to do it too. Sounded terrible, but never hurt a thing. I used to work the steering wheel back and forth a few times to get the fluid moving and heating up faster and it would quit within a few minutes.

My 1/2 ton gasser did it this morning at about 20 degrees. I just let it idle and warm up a bit and it'll go away. I'd imagine that PS fluid is kinda thick when it's that cold, so the pump whines as it tries to pump it/suck it from the resevoir.

Yeah, it quit in the 10 minute drive to work. I can't really let my truck warm up because it pisses off the neighbors in my apartment complex. My truck is really loud, haha. I've honestly had people come out and yell at me for idling for more than 60 seconds.

You don't know how to yell back? Fuck those people...don't let your diesel engine suffer an early death from not getting warmed up properly just because your neighbors want to yell.

Haha, stalk much? I lived there last year, but I've still got 3 or 4 apartments full of close friends there, so I'm there quite a bit. Do you live there?
