"Commercial" insurance policy for my R3500?

After emailing all of the email conversations to the office manager on Friday letting her know how much of a hassle this ordeal has been and that I'm not happy with the lack of communication within their office, I get a reply this morning from Agent #2, the Multi-Policy Representative...not from the office manager herself. That says a lot IMO.

"Again I apologize for the confusion but Tammy does not handle the commercial accounts in this office and changed the coverage on your truck in error. Again I am sorry for that. I also contacted Raleigh concerning your vehicle but I contacted the Insurance Commission that handles all of the insurance for NC and they told me the vehicle would have to be placed on a commercial policy with commercial rates. This is also the same thing our commercial underwriter told me when I contacted them about your policy. You must carry the ENOL policy or any trailers you may pull will not have liability coverage if they are not in your name. If they are in your name, then they are just added to your policy for the liability coverage.
Please let me know if you have any further questions."

I know they keep telling you commercial and I am no insurance expert. However, I know that to be considered commercial in North Carolina it takes more than weight. That is why they came out with the weighted tags instead of just commercial tags. There is a very important piece they are forgetting when they keep saying its commercial. You are not using it IN COMMERCE. also, there is no requirement for a private person to have individual insurance on a trailer for liability, if there were you would not be able to get plates for it. They do like to know which truck will mainly be pulling it. But I have asked my insurance company about this several times. They have reiterated several times that liability for the trailer falls to the truck pulling it.

Also, I don't know why they would say you need a commercial policy for a motor home. There is separate insurance for an RV, but it is not commercial and actually all my vehicles are on the same policy and same bill, they are just insured at different levels.

I agree with the others that you need to talk to another company and don't call it a race trailer.

Try a company called Amica. It's a co-op type set up, meaning we get a dividend back once a year. That's not important other than something to at least be aware of. Have used them for years, not alot of people ever have heard of them. My financial advisor put me on to them a long time ago. They've been great with us. My wife likes to use them about once a year for one thing or another as it turns out :D. They have always appeared quite professional and competent. Certainly this issue you are having is not the first one-ton dually that they (State Farm I think you said you have) have ever insured.....I'd run like hell from that office for fear if something ever did happen they would have your policy fubared when yo did really need it to be there. I look at insurance as there for the big stuff...liability. Not really caring about a few bucks one way or the other but want it right if/when ever needed. Back to your situation, whether they have their shit straight or not I can't say but just their lack of having a clue would cause me to change at least agents if not companies. Just my $0.02. Good luck!
