the 44re in it now needs to be replaced soon. reverse gear is already out, and the rest of the transmission is nearing death.

what are some of the best transmissions to replace the 44re with, which i hear is a weak chrysler transmission. i'm on a budget here of a couple of hundred bucks. therefore, it's obviously going to have to come from a donor or a yard, and relatively easy to find.

please, give me some suggestions. pricing and location would be even better.

thanks!

I've rebuilt a few of the with parts from Hughes performance transmissions and never had a problem except my friend Sean filling his with 42re water. I work for the Hendrick Chrysler Jeep in Fayetteville so if you need any help I'm there all day long.

Service tech, I couldn't live with my self selling used cars. New I could probably do...not I prefer to fix them.

I don't know what your really thinking your going to come up with. Nothing is going to really "swap in" without having to deal with computers and wiring harnesses, and the check engine light staying on and it not passing inspection.

You could put a torqueflite in there, only 3 speed, no overdrive. And you won't pass inspection because the check engine light will be on because the computer won't have any trans inputs

Or you could bring it over to wilmington and have me rebuild it $400-800(depending on what hard parts are busted up)

46RE from 5.9 ZJ's will bolt up. Beefier internals and I believe all the wiring is the same as the 44.

The 46RE's may have come in some of the R/T dakotas as well around the same year (98). Might be worth looking into.
