Competitive pricing among sandblasting providers discussed

A guy in Selma that has a business called "Steel Dreams Made Real" gave me a quote to simply sand blast my 4 steel wheels. The estimate is $150. This seems high to me. Once upon a time I did some of this myself and in a blast cabinet simply removing paint and some surface rust from steel is very easy and fast. I offered him $100 and he said he could not do it for that. What says the hive?

Call Jtl services in Fayetteville/east over and see what his price is. May tell you if it's legit or not.

Don't quote me but last time I talked to powder coater, it was $30 per wheel to blast and coat single color...

I wasn't interested in powder coating because I had planned to paint them myself but he told me that to blast and coat the 4 wheels was $400!
I can buy a new set of wheels cheaper than that already powder coated LOL.

I will give JTL a call tomorrow. I gotta get these wheels done.

My last set I had sand blasted cost me 40 bucks for 4 wheels. I would say $150 is way high.

He told me that he does not reuse any media and that his blaster used 100lbs of sand in 20 minutes. He also told me the parts he does come out "clean and smooth".
While I can appreciate attention to detail these wheels do not need to look like something on a Chip Foose car.

If I could get em blasted and powder coated for 30-40 / wheel I would do it but I can paint them myself too. I got skillz yo.

Remember that there are plenty of nooks and crannies that could cause the process to take longer than simply tossing them in the blast cabinet.

More shop hours = more $

$150/4= $37.5 per wheel

If he is going to blast 100% of the wheel: outer face, inner face, beadseat, etc. then that might not be too far fetched to charge.

On the other hand, if I had someone local that would do 4 wheels for $40, I would be waiting at their front door first thing tomorrow morning. That is one helluva a deal.

Found a place that seems reasonable. Told me $20 each. Taking them Wednesday and he will do them while I wait. They are between Dunn and Fayetteville.

I have been using Gainey's for decades now. Good folks for blasting. Powder coating so much though. I always have them blast my frames / tubs and stuff then let them self etch it for me. I provide the paint though. He does a lot of Military stuff so make sure you know he is not backed up.

I got it done today at Gaineys. He is a SUPER nice guy. Chatted with him for an hour while his employee blasted away.

I gave him an extra $20 and told him to buy that guy lunch. He has a hard dirty job.

He does a great job. I live about five miles from him.[emoji3]

Was it still the older gentleman that was doing the blasting ?

Something that bugs me everytime I read the headline.

Ripoff is a pretty big claim.
You asked for a price, the guy gave you a price, you thought it was too high. You took your business elsewhere. How was anything here a rip off?
Plus you mention the name of the business in the first line. Now if I google "company X" "ripoff" this thread will show up.

A ripoff would have been him quoting you $50 then refusing to give them back until you paid him $150.

I understand your point. However the word was used as a question, not a statement. I feel most people will read and comprehend what is being asked. I never badmouthed the business, only questioned their pricing as being competitive and fair. I told him that my wheels were not show pieces and that I always try to support local business but we could not strike a deal. I found after calling around that he was approximately double the going price in his quote. Too bad as he is close and it would have been nice to have a place in town like this I could frequent. I edited the title as to not offend.

LOL, yeah I am looking at my own cabinet but that means a bigger compressor. Gainey's does a GREAT job but they are a little over an hour away.

I am taking my mower deck off my JD 265 to him next week. I want to repaint it so it lasts another 25 years LOL

Harbor freight has a two pot pressurized setup on sale currently. Seen it yesterday. Just an idea, you could get that and then build a cabinet.
