Computer problems

OS is Windows Vista. Last few days the screen saver either locks up the computer or causes the Blue Screen and shuts down. If screen saver is disabled then computer operates normally. Any ideas what to do? I`m thinking its the graphics card but everything works perfectly except screen saver.

Is it the 'photo slideshow' screensaver? This has been known to cause problems within vista...like everything else.

Also, try selecting another screen saver and see if it does it there, too. Is this one of the stock windows screen savers, or one you downloaded?
These are all stock screen savers. Initially one just caused it to lock up, another would cause blue screen and shut down.

Not running the "photo slide" screen saver.

Took the cover off, blew out all fans
(CPU, cabinet, power pack, and graphics card has one)
Even left cover off and stuck small fan blowing inside. When I did that it quit locking up/ shutting down for 4 days. Now it`s doing it again even with extra fan.
Blue screen says it`s the NVIDIA graphics card causing the shut down. But everything works perfect except screen saver.

Uninstall video drivers and reinstall the latest from NVIDEA.

What type of computer is this?

Sometimes certain codecs that get installed from other software will make your video card do some strange things. Have you installed any software that has codecs recently?

Get all the files you need to another storage device cause you are about to lose it all!! Transfer it to a new computer. This one is done for. Have fun shopping for a new one.

These are your best solutions. Especially #1, I have fixed a number of problems by running that program and deleting all that it finds.
Also, it amazes me how many people have antivirus but don't ever use it or update it, that helps quite a bit as well.
Downloaded and running malwarebytes. Hopefully that fixes it.

Run and update AVG on a regular basis.

Downloaded the current NVIDIA drivers Friday night.....no help

Computer is a HP desktop. Not sure about codecs(?)

Found this it might help

I've had the same issues since installing Vista. It is a documented problem with Nvidia's Vista driver. The latest driver available on Nvidia's site http://www.nvidia.com/object/vistaqualityassurance.html claims to correct the porblem on some cards. Unfortunatly mine still has the issue . I have set my computer not to sleep at all. Good luck

Nvidia has posted new Beta Vista drivers 32bit http://www.nvidia.com/object/winvista_x86_158.18.html
64bit
http://www.nvidia.com/object/winvista_x64_158.18.html
It seems to have corrected the sleep resume issue on my system hope it help!

i call the manufacturer of the video card and they told me that it is was a memory modual on the card and it is unrepairable and needs to be replaced, i hope it was not caused from windows vista but that is what they say is the problem. thanks for all the replys though.

I had the same problem, but after updating my graphic cards the problem was solved. Try updating your graphic card from the Manufacturer's web site, I belive that will solve your problem.

i don't think this was a software issue, this happend even in the bios, in the bios none of the drivers are loaded.. also once i replaced the video card with the 8600gt it works fine, not as good of a card as my other one but it has dx10

Thanks

Ran malwarebytes and deleted all infections. No help

Computer has always been set not to "sleep". Only screen saver

Have not gotten into BIOS because I know absolutely nothing about it.

I can play movies in the dvd player so I`m thinking it`s not software(?)

For the time being, I`ve disabled the screen saver and shutting monitor off when not using it.

Will try doing this later. I get tired of messing with it after awhile.
3)run sfc (here is a how to...http://www.tech-recipes.com/rx/2231/..._file_checker/)
