Wife has an HP laptop that is only a year old. The piece you plug charger into on computer has broken loose from the motherboard and needs to be soldered back. Anybody know someone that can do this?
Intrex in the shopping center with toys'r'us behind hanes mall.
Or you can bring it to me at Office Depot off of Peters Creek and I can send it in to central repair for you. Intrex will be faster and cheaper though.
I stopped by intrex in greensboro on my way to work a couple weeks ago and the guy there told me they wouldn't solder the piece that they will only replace the motherboard and for a price of $300+. I would probably buy her a new laptop rather than pay that. Any idea what it might cost through your work?
I have done quite a few of them. Used to be worthwhile, but now that laptops are so darn cheap, it's not so good of an option, unless it's a really high-end laptop. Depending on the make/model, usually end up with about 3 hours in the repair...full disassembly, repair, reassemble, burn-in test to make sure nothing screwed up in the process.
My old laptop did this about a year and a half ago...I could have fixed it...but just bought a new one...would have only cost me the time to do it, no money. Just not worth it.
I do these all the time where I work. It really takes me all of about an hour or two and the charge is only 120+part. The sucky thing is that my work is in Charlotte which is way to far to drive for something that simple. Look up the make and model of the laptop and look for it's power jack on ebay (they are everywhere and usually range from $10-$20). Then take your time and remove all of the screws and carefully take it apart. Once you get the board out make sure you didn't break the board cause if you did you're probably screwed. If you didn't remove old solder points, clean the holes, and replace with new jack. A novice should be able to do this in under a few hours if you take your time.
I thought about trying it myself but have never done any soldering on computer or electrical stuff and was worried about getting it too hot. I do copper gutters and roofing so I can solder with a torch and stick of solder all day but I wasn't real sure about trying on the computer board. I guess ill give it a try and see what happens. Thanks for the help guys
yeah don't use a torch cause you will melt the board, just use a regular soldering gun and you should be fine. Just make sure you don't hold the gun on the board for to terribly long.
There is a guy on Clemmonsville rd that does it out of his garage. going south on Peters Creek Pkwy from I 40, take the exit for Clemmonsville Rd and turn left, go over the bridge and he'll be the first house on the left after the stop light. Usually has a used car of some sort in his yard for sale.
