Considering a half ton pickup

First time I've ever considered a pickup so I need some schooling to get me started.
I'm looking at 2008-2011 models, 4wd, crew cab or extended cab (need a back seat). This would be replacing my daily driver so I need it to be comfortable (I'm getting older too).
Mostly it would drive me back and forth to work, occasionally I'd like to tow an XJ and possibly some quads at the same time on long trips.
Looks wise, I like the f150, silverado and tundra.
Any particular brand have significant advantages over the others? I have no brand loyalty at all other then not wanting to buy cheaply made crap.
Don't mean to start brand wars mostly I just need to know if there are general rules of thumbs for the brands, so many choices when picking out a pickup.

Go drive them and see. I would love to have the new ford F150 with the tow package and the 6 speed tranny. The tundra would be next, but I am just basing that on looks. I have driven both the chevy and the fords. Ford made me smile more... but it is all personal choices I think.

Seems like you ALWAYS end up hauling more that you think you will once you have a tow rig. I would opt for a 3/4 ton truck over the 1/2 ton. Just my .02.

While your at it get a diesel, no use half stepping, no pun intended :)

^^^^ What JC said. Please do not make the same mistake I did. I bought a half ton and while it tows most everything I need, I should have bought the 3/4 ton and better yet a 1 ton.

The diesel will get you better mpg, however you're going to spend the money you save in mpg in maintenance. So your choice on the engine. The diesel will tow a 100 times better.
