Contemplating going to Pull-A-Part and buying trans/trade axle linkage and such. What about computer? Will the swap mess with anything electrical?

On a side note, what about going 5 spd ? Could you use a set up from a TJ?

No worries on the electrical, as long as you don't care about the 4wd light. 5 speed you would need to change the PCM, I would check to see if you can get a manual PCM before doing a 5sp swap. T/c linkage will be fun, but there's kits to go directly from the shifter to the case.

Ive done it on a obd1 xj and it wasn't bad at all. I went to pull a part and pulled everything out at once. Bolted it in the next day and was on the road. I went straight to a d44 front axle but the d30 bolts in. For the transfer case I got a shifter while I was there and built the linkages with two 3/8 female heims. That was before the boostwerks kit came out. I will never build another one since those came out.

Like akelley said, electrical is no problem.

The only electrical problem you might encounter is connectors. As long as you have the same year or close to the same year transmission and transfer case it will not be an issue.

OK I'll be the asshole.
XJs are a dime a dozen. Why go through the trouble? Selling it and buying a 4x4 you'd be money ahead on your time alone

I have a unicorn. A 2001 XJ with less than 90k. If it were 4wd I could triple my investment easily. I can almost double it today. This is the Craigslist crowd but not the nc4x4 crowd. Buying a donor Jeep for $600 (which I have) and swapping parts I could resell the donor Jeep for say.......$600. All I'm out is time in my garage away the world!

It'd really be a unicorn with a 5 speed.. I don't think they put manuals into 01s though... ecm would be a issue unless the newer ones are reprogrammable..

When I did my swap I think I had maybe 200 bucks in the 4wd conversion not counting the front axle. I did mine because I had the jeep as a parts runner and was building axles anyway so all I needed was a transmission, transfer case and driveshaft.

One thing to be aware of is that 97 and newer transmission have 4 rotor speed sensors in the transmission and the eariler has 2 rotor. If you stay with the same "body style" (84-90, 91-96,97-01) you'll be fine.
