I'm doing the brakes on the Escape this morning. I got the 30" shop blowing on me to keep the skeeters off me and trying to keep cool. I'm in the shade but I was still sweating and hot. I bought a cooling towel a while back but never used it. I went and got it, soaked it and squeezed the excess water out and put it on the back of neck and draped over my shoulders. I sat back on my double steel milk crate w the fan blowing on me and I was about to shiver! It's making the job much more comfortable.

I have used them myself some. Keep them wet and if it isn’t dripping humid they work.

I want one of those fans you wear around your neck when I’m mowing or on the tractor.

A guy I know mounted a radiator fan on the roll bar of his lawnmower blowing right at his head and neck. He said if it quits, he's not mowing grass until it's working.

Toro makes an attachment for my Zmaster that is 2 high velocity fans mounted to the ROPS that blows on your neck. It’s $ but I’ve thought about it.

I have two 12v fans with cig plugs I used to use on hot nights catfishing 🤔 hmmmmm

This is one of the neck AC thingies

My wife recently brought home a similar thing, one of these
Amazon product ASIN B095PC4SF8after being at her mom's who had one.
As far as I can tell it is literally just an air circulator and does not actually "cool" air, but she swears by it.
For the money... why not try it?

We have usedt he cooling towels with the kids on hot days with good succes. Like you @mommucked I don't know why its's never occured to me to use one while working outside myself.

If anybody cares about the actual physiology here.... the best way to avoid hypothrmia is to draw heat away from your body. This is why we sweat. People tend to think it's the moisture on your skin that does the trick, but it really isn't. What matters is the evaporation - water leaving your skin carries heat away from it, lowering the temp of the skin udnerneath.
What that means is that if it's a dry, hot day and you aren't great at sweating then something like a moist towel is great bc it adds water that will vanish into the air and cool you down.
But if it's a humid day and you're sweating buckets already... that moist towel isn't going to help at all and could trap more heat that it releases. The best thing at that point is just lots of air flow to try and enhance the movement of the water from your skin, so something liek one of these neck fan things is probably the best bet.

While cooling your neck does cool off the blood to your brain, it’s actually a good way to cook your organs. It makes your brain think you are hypothermic and raises your core temp. A better way to cool your body off based on science is to cool the three areas that reject heat. Palm of your hand, sole of foot, and upper face. You want it cool enough but not cold. Cold will cause the capillaries to constrict. Cool but not cold will cool off the blood in these areas to cool the body the fastest.

side note, this is why a lot of people stick a leg out of the covers while sleeping. It’s the body rejecting heat by the foot sub consciously. Your foot goes out to get to the cool air.

When I have been really about overcooked I will run cool water from a faucet or hose over my wrists. It is magical how you feel the rush of cool follow your blood around.

@Mac5005 are you saying the neck cooler could damage you?

Some of the neck things say “fan”but some claim they cool. It’s probably like those electric coolers that use heat sinks but not sure. The one I linked claims:
  • Instant cooling: This cooling neckband fan uses semiconductor cooling technology. The current generated by the semiconductor cooling chip creates a temperature difference and achieves instant cooling within two seconds. 🤷

Yes they could*. And by that I mean if you are getting too hot and then cool your neck, and that in turn cools your blood and brain, this can make your brain think your core is too cold, and divert blood to the core from extremities. This reduces capillary flow and capillary cooling. In turn your body does a lot of things to then raise core temp.
This is what I mean by you can “cook your organs”.
Andrew Huberman has talked about this several times and the current tech to try to combat this. I think it’s called the cooling mitt. A device of ideal temp to cool the body through the palms as fast as possible. It’s currently being used by some special ops and professional athletes to validate findings.

Sounds to me like it's a heat sink it's blowing the air through.
Makes me wonder where the heat goes though, it's gotta go somewhere

Tried a few but they get misplaced or thrown away we really just keep the coolers iced down and transition from water to beer about 2-3 o’clock depending on how the days going
