Corner guards

I recently come across a set of alumn. diamond plate corner guards (approx 11ga), and need a little help. The vehicle in question is an 04 TJ.

First question, I cant seem to find a plug that should disconnect the taillights from the wire harness. is there one or will I have to splice the wires? I remember taking off a friends tailight on a yj and it had a plug that I disconnected. I cant find my flashlight and its hard to see from up top or down below. and all I feel is dirt. lol

next, this stuff comes flat with no radius bend. what is the best method of bending the plate? should I use heat? I cant remember the particulars on alumn. dp from when I was working in a fab shop, but I think its kinda hard to bend without cracking and I'm not sure what grade it is.

With your factory tail light removed, carefully pull the wiring harness out until you find the connecting plug which should be wrapped in a piece of neoprene. Carefully remove the neoprene so that you can reuse it later and then separate the plug by pressing on the plastic release tab as shown in the pic to the left.

sometimes its easier to to pull the plastic out from under the wheel well to get to it the one on the drivers side i could pull out of the hole but the passenger side i had to go from underneath and someone once told me that you could wrap the guards around a telephone pole and its really close to the same diameter as the corners of a tj
 
I wouldn't use heat!:rolleyes: We bend .125 alum on 90 degree's on a press brake everyday but you want need that sharpe of a angle. I've used pipe of different sizes to help and just put my back into it.:lol: Just clamp a straight edge to the pipe before starting. Let us know how it works for ya.

I was working on the passenger side to start off with, just to have a look-see. and when the wire wouldn't come out of the hole, going in from the bottom was my next move. but without light I couldn't figure out squat. 3 wire looms, and mud was all I could feel.

haven't done nothing to the driver side yet.

I was planning on mounting the guard @ the taillight, then gently folding it over to the side. this would work better with bolts/screws, but I ain't sure yet if I wanna be drilling in the side of my Jeep. Considering that they don't come stock with mounting holes or hardware, I guess they mount using double-sided tape. idk how Im going to do it yet.
 
Get some tech help from where you bought the corners. They should be able to tell you what type of alum the corners are made from. That sucks the come flat and not formed. I guess its easier to ship that way.
 
haha, no ebay, local guys in Walnut Cove are starting to make jeep parts and I got the first set as a "trial" run (free baby). Ill send the guy an email soon and ask. All I got to do it put them on, or try to put them on and see how they fit and if any changes need to be made, ie. too big a gap or bolt hole placement, and then snap a few pics of the finished product for their website.

"Jeep parts R&D" mmmmmmm, I like the sound of that! :)
 
well, I had some good daylight today to work on the guards. found out that they will need some tweaking to fit right, like where they are supposed to mount flush to the fender flares, there is a big gap at the top. and the gas tank hole is a little off too. so, Ill email the guy later and see if we cant get another set to test fit. Ive got some pics of todays progress that I'll post up later.

lined up, and the gas filler hole is a little off, and there aren't any holes for the screws.

I didn't get the radius exactly as I wanted, but its not going to be perfect working with basic hand tools. I could bolt it down as I go, but Ill wait and see if the guy wants to make any changes to his design before I do that.

I found out today that the telephone pole is actually a little too big... :lol:

but it helped me straighten out the oops I made while trying to bend it on my porch. :wheel:
