Cosmic Crisp Apples

I love the organic Fuji apples at Harris Teeter. I guess Fuji are some of the sweetest apples, and I stray away from anything that even starts to hint at being tart...forget sour.

I for one love a good cold Honey Crisp Apple
We were at URE once and a family in a Fore runner, all a bit/LOT overweight and they didn't bring lunch so I offered the 9 yr old daughter a "cold apple" and she took it with permission from her parents and once she bit into it her eyes lit up and she yells "Mom and dad, we got to get some cold apples!" :shaking::D Poor kid probably never had a snack or food that was good for her!

Ok, so I just ate half of one after I got home. Pretty good, a little sweet for my taste, but a lot more complex than just sweetness. There almost seems to be some floral-ness to it, like the Envy apples have (they're even sweeter yet).
I don't think I'd cook with it; it seems like a good solid eating apple though, and pretty firm (I hate soft apples). I'd have to say that there are some apples I like better, but that just comes down to personal taste. I actually like the tarter apples a lot, but don't mind sweet apples as long as sweet isn't the only party trick. I'd probably keep trying the kinds I haven't had (or haven't had in a while) instead of buying more Cosmic Crisp. It's good, but it's not a showstopper, and there so many other good apples out there that I can't say it's the best apple.

Now, if I can just find some Cortlands and have a nice nostalgia trip to my youth.... And make a freezer full of pies, because Cortlands mixed with Macs make a ridiculous pie.

I made a pie at Thanksgiving with Macintosh and Granny Smith that my 7-yo still talks about. Thanks for the reminder about Cortlands.

I love just about all apples, but the Cripps Pink (or Pink Lady) is probably my favorite followed closely by Honey Crisp. I also like that the local HT has Pink Ladies about the size of a softball.

Publix has them, at least our local one does. I got a few this past weekend but haven't eaten one yet.

They're huge.... That's why I haven't eaten one yet, they're too big for a snack.
I checked our local Publix and they don't have them. Will try another Publix. I wondered about their size and figured if they are of the Honey Crisp family, they'd probably be large in size. Wish I had kept a pic I took of a Honey Crisp I found at Teeter while shopping with my daughter, it was literally the size of her head and had to buy it, ended up being a $6 apple but was damn good and I had just gotten over being sick and was craving one.

I have found a few "new to me breeds" of fruit lately that have just blown my mind. One being the Cara Cara orange and the cotton candy grapes. Those Cara Cara Oranges are the best ones I have ever had. Super sweet and low acidity, so I'm trying to complete the trifecta by finding some of these Cosmic Crisps now.

If you want complex and sweet, try the Envy. It's similar to the cosmic crisp but sweeter, and also smaller. I bought one the other week and I can't hang with that level of sweet in an apple. But, I'm the guy who eats the leftover half of a lime when making guacamole, and thinks grapefruit is wonderful.

I will say that I'm not really onboard with the agricultural practices that are really driving the cosmic crisp craze, after doing a little research. Seems very heavily marketed because of the massive investment in a highly engineered agricultural product, and one that's easy to grow and very storage stable.

I will have to try that one as well. I hated apples for the longest time because growing up my parents only bought Red Delicious and I hated trying to chew through that skin only to bite into mush.

That sucks. I grew up in apple country in New England when I was little, so even our field trip school lunches had proper apples in them. We used to make a freezer full of single crust (top crust) pies in casserole dishes, and I'd have apple pie almost every morning before school during the cold seasons. Sure beats cereal.

I can't remember the last time I've had a red delicious, because they're barely worth eating...

I love an apple now. I think before I discovered Honey Crisp, I was eating a Gala and then once I discovered Honey Crisp, there was no turning back.

So I found a place that had em and I bought 2 of them. Threw in the fridge and let em get real cold. I wasn't impressed. More of a floral taste? Honeycrisp is still number 1 on my list.
