I'm thinking about ditching the 22re and swapping for a Chevy 350 small block. How much am I looking at for a motor ready to go and a turbo 350 trans with adapters etc? I plan on using my Toyota tcase. God bless
At some point it becomes not a matter of vehicle specific as it does engine swap in general. Weather its a SBC, vortex or ford swap, the vehicle its in is insignificant. Purchase price of the drive train will be the determining factor in price. My magnum 318/727/300 swap in my old YJ cost me about $3500 and would have been no different if it had been in a Toyota, jeep or whatever. My current 6.0/4l80/205 was about $6000 from junkyard pull to running and driving. Determine what the full drive train package will cost you and then triple it to figure up the total swap cost.
The SBC is the cheapest way to go. There is so much less you have to have to get it rollin. A decent used SBC shouldnt cost much more than a dollar per cube. And so much stuff was originally bolted to the SBC that if you choose wisely, you dont spend a lot of money on adapters. Also almost every accessory is cheaper. You save the computer/harness work, o2 sensors and bung installs in the exhaust, setting up the cooling system, air filter system, oil pan swap. That kind of stuff adds up!
Now the EFI system is fool proof and very reliable. Carbureted is more to tinker with. (Solution...propane on a SBC works very well for me. Very reliable and is cheap!)
