Couple of gear questions

First, how do I go about figuring out what gears I currently have in my front end? Ive got a 93 Grand Cherokee, 4.0 litre automatic non-factory tow package. I read a FAQ post on Jeepforum.com and read that My D30 should have 3.55 gears. How do I find this out for sure? The reason I would like to know is that I just picked up an 8.8 today and it came with 3.55 gears so I was hoping to just get that rearend swapped in and save a little money on the re-gearing for the time being. This runs me into my next dilema, the gears with the 8.8 are not installed. How difficult is it to install gears? Are special tools needed? Or should I just leave the gear work to the pros?

there ought to be a tag on the diff cover...you'll see 3.07 or 3.55 or whatever it is as part of the numbers on there...

since the axle is loose (i.e. not installed on your Jeep)...just run it down to Andy at Carolina Rock Shop...you'll save some money on the regear by him not having to deal with the vehicle...

Ive talked to him about having it put under the jeep and I plan on going to him when ive got the funds together, hes given me a quote of everything that will need to be done and about how much it should cost. Are you saying it would be cheaper to have the gears installed with the axle not in the vehicle? Or saying he might not charge as much becuase hes not going to have the hassle of installing it in the vehicle at the same time? Thanks for the advice, ill check the cover tomorrow.

he generally knocks $100 off to regear just an axle ($150 vs. $250)...but if he was doing the labor of installing the axle, you may have a different price quote...

Ill find out from him, yeah ive been talking with him for about the past 2 weeks about my plans, now that I know what axle im going to use he was able to give me alittle more clear of an answer. Hes a good guy, stayed patient with me and my many questions and ideas. Thanks
