I am looking at buying a 1999 Land Rover Discovery II with 130k. The transmission has been rebuilt. The front drive shaft has been replaced. The head gaskets and valve cover gaskets have been replaced and the valves were redrilled. Are these typical repairs to make on a land rover with this mileage or does this mean there are more problems to come?
Also, does anyone know how xteras ride and if they are any good off road?

all i know is that with a landrover the second it leaves the dealer there are more problems to come and i have heard that exterras suck the gas

Yea, Land rovers are less than reliable. Outstanding off roader though. Rented an xterra once and it did pretty good out in the back yard.

if the landrovers had all that replaced...and its its got 130k on it....it means its about 5k from having to replace all that stuff again!!!! Expect 13-15mpgs HWY!!!

Disco IIs suck. make sure it has the locking center diff. they also dont hold their value so dont pay too much for it. a 96 or 97 would be better BUT.......

for the money that either cost, i would get a 4runner or tacoma. If you need a big SUV get an older blazer.

Land Rovers are the biggest POS's of all time and :gay: people drive them, expect about a $500-$600 repair each month, also the parts for them are retarded expensive and usually only available from the dealer, do yourself a favor and buy a jeep, you will thank us in the longrun. Xterra's are good vehicles for light off roading, would not go hardcore with one

I second ALL of that - especially the part about those who drive them... Just look at the driver when you see one... If you need to haul soccer balls and want to put a cheese and wine cooler in the back then get the Rover, but if you want to play and have a DD too, get a Jeep...

True Dat!

Yea if you have lots of money to throw at a LR then get one. But if you wanna budget build, DD, or good gas mileage, stay away. Im not sure of the common problems they have with them, but i know they recurr alot! I was looking to get a 97 MANUAL with 130k miles on it but it had a blown head. Looks like that might be the common problem. They drink gas as do the Xterras. Like everyone else said, go with a Jeep, parts a cheaper, they are better on gas (in this case) and they are easy to fix. Not too mention they are great off road (all models). But if you have $30 k to spend, go for the Land Rover Defender 90, thats the only truck i would take over a Wrangler.

And yeah, LR drivers are certified douches!

easy there jeep guys. my hardbody v6 on 33's gets 20 mph on the highway and the guy i wheel with with a tj gets like 16. so a nissan isn't always less fuel efficient than a jeep. but idk maybe xterra sucks more gas than a hardbody v6.

yeah i'm going to have to disagree with you on that... i got mine with 109k miles on it and i knew that i would have some problems. granted most of them were caused by the first owners stripping bolts in my axels covers from tightening them way too much. and i knew by doing my research that most of not all land rovers have brake issues over 100k and about 1200 miles after i got mine my rear brake caliper broke off from my brake housing. that and smaller things like replacing hoses and junk like that cost me 2500 bucks. but aside from that and the normal maintenance (oil, transmission, gear box, etc.) cost me not even 50 bucks every 3 months. and if you know where to look you can find parts fairly easy. plus land rover makes their vehicles just a little easy to take apart, so if you have a little bit of mechanical prowess you can pretty much take them apart.
