Coyote managment

seen a real deal lion on dude at works trail cam. he turned it in to NCDNR only to never get cam back. These critters are escaping or being turned out. really simple. they dont have to wander in from timbuctoo, same as big snakes and gators. people buy these things and they get too big etc.

I hunt a family farm 3.5 hours from me. Simply cant be there all the time. otherwise Id have night vision etc but most folks just dont have time to stay up all night and sling rounds into the darkness SAFELY, to me thats a big deal. when I hunt yotes down there, its from a big raised box and Im shooting at them into a fallow field under full moon. otherwise Im dont feel safe enough. Ive got too many needle pushers down there running around to be shooting in the dark with high powered rifle.

That's how I used to hunt for coyotes. Then read if you're using the moonlight to see them, they'll see you long before you see them. Bought some coyote/hog (red/green) lights & went on a new moon night when it was 100% black...didn't see anything but racoons (that landowner does not want racoons shot to preserve turkeys) & deer, but none of them seemed bothered by the red light. Plus side is I have a white bulb too that I use when tracking deer.

(that landowner does not want racoons shot to preserve turkeys) & deer

I may be confused but how do raccoons help the deer and turkey populations? Do coyotes go after them first and leave the turkeys and deer alone?

I don't think they hurt the deer population other than competition for food/corn, but I don't know that for sure. Raccoons are nesting predators (so are possums) and will eat turkey eggs & turkey poults leaving less turkeys for me to shoot/eat.

So you are saying the landowner doesnt care about turkeys and wont let you shoot coons? They way it reads is confusing.

Sorry about that, hopefully this doesn't add to it...I should have said he doesn't mind if raccoons are shot to preserve turkeys...brain fart!
I have permission from this land owner to hunt & put in food plots. I plant food plots 2-3 times a year & hunt deer very regularly (will be less this year since I've moved 2.5 hours away). I have asked him about hunting turkey & geese and he wouldn't mind it, but he will not stop putting out corn for the deer which could be seen as baiting. I can & do shoot raccoons while I'm coyote hunting in hopes of one day changing his mind so that I can legally hunt turkey/geese.

Just don’t shoot into fog without knowing what you are shooting like this guy, killed another hunter.
Hunter mistaken for animal fatally shot in Alexander County
This fella was hunting in broad daylight using an electronic call. I am pretty sure he was a young preacher and the shooter had some sort of police background. From what I understand he shot not once but twice. He has been charged with involuntary manslaughter or something similar.
Really not a good situation. I kept thinking foul play or complete idiot.

As crazy as it sounds it happens. My buddy got shot in the back of the head turkey hunting, by the guy that was hunting with him. The guy got disoriented when they split up and thought the back of his head looked like a turkey body so he shot. 5 yards closer they said he would have been dead. He got knocked out and now has a couple pellets permanently in the back of his neck.

Ya Craig doesn’t remember really what happened so the story is a little fuzzy, main thing I got was his buddy was a trigger happy and wanted to take his first turkey didn’t have a good sight of what he shot at

^ uh yeah officer. I shot a 200# 6' tall turkey over there all bunched up at the base of that tree with a noggin the size of a basket ball, and the second time he was screaming and waving his arms all wildly. weirdest damn turkey ever

I have heard of folks on public land getting shot because they were either in barely the way of he shot pattern or were on the other side of the turkey. and shooter simply had no idea somebody else was around. but to AIM at a man is just messed up, especially if you knew he was around.

Yea, if that happened to me I would kick that buddy in the nuts eyeryday, every time I saw him, no matter where. Meeting him for lunch...rochambeau and I win. See him out with his significant other, I drop to a knee and groin punch that bastard. In line behind him at the Quickie-Mart...combat boot between the legs. He'd pay for that every time I saw him.

It is no different then gun debates and target identification.........NO education. Days are long gone from when at least one father figure, uncle or what ever teaches you how to shoot, hunt, or simply apply safe ownership of a firearm.
If anything needs fixed its mandatory in depth education at all levels. Owner or not. Like home ed or what ever it's called. Scandinavian countries who apply this have the lowest gun violence in the world. We fight the gun illiterate more then the rest. Media, the general public, and politicians prove it.

My wife was spending the day with her sisters oldest boy last yr who was 8yrs old at the time. As they were passing by gander mountain she asked him if he wanted to go in there. He told her “no, that store is dangerous”. Confused as hell she asked him why, he said because they have guns in there. You can guess what type of people his parents are. She had a talk with him but when she told me this I felt like banging my head off the damn table. So much for education and taking the curiosity out of the tool that goes bang!
