Crab grass!

So I have been dealing with a an entire yard full of crab grass for a few years now ever since I had a driveway put in and the contractor brought in fill dirt to level it out. So what are some methods to get rid of it? I am open to all methods short of scraping off the top six inches of dirt and bringing clean top soil (just don't have the budget for that).

I am almost to the point or round uping the entire yard once the crab grass comes out.
 
At this point of time in the year, I'd just deal with it til fall. Apply preemergent in 2 weeks, hope whatever fescue grass you may have had does alright, then burn/scrape/reseed in the fall.
 
Kill it??? Shoot, I planted it at my last house. Stays green longer, doesn't burn/turn brown during the summer, and stays short.
 
Maybe I don't have crab grass then, this weed I am talking about runs sideways and will sprout up to over a foot tall with seed packets at the top if left uncut for long enough. It starts coming out in early June and then dies out and turns brown by the first of November.
 
Sounds like Bermuda...

Sorry...shoulda used 'sarcasm font'...crab grass does stay green and relatively short...but is a weed and grows little sprout things.

We had a huge area of crabgrass on both sides of the driveway for several years. I'd kill it and it just came back. Finally last summer I just dug it all up by hand.
 
Sounds like you have Bahia (highway) grass. It's tough as shit, but can be annoying if you don't like mowing every 3 days.

Spray whatever weeds come up in the spring with this:

You may need to respray 1-2 weeks later. DO NOT spray 2-3 days before or after cutting your lawn. DO NOT spray when temperatures are above 90 degrees.

This is pretty much on it. With the two Fert and Pre Em apps you shouldn't even have any crabgrass until late July and August. Then you can spray the Crabgrass Control product if needed.

And from your description, you may have Bahia Grass, Dallis Grass or some other perennial weed grasses. Bermuda is a fine leaf grass and doesn'y sound like what you have described. There is no need to dig up crabgrass, the seeds are everywhere and if that is your issue you will continue to get it unless you apply pre em 2x per spring and summer at 8 week intervals as already stated. Once whatever you have comes up, take a picture of it before you mow and show the stalks you are talking about and we can identify and give you a plan of action.
