So I'm shopping around for a vehicle for my teenager and I check out CL. Im really surprised at the prices on several of the vehicles. They seem surprisingly low.

Found a nice little S-10 truck for $1500. Just from the pictures I'd have thought it would have been closer to $2500-3000 range. So I send a text to ask if they still have it. Here's the response:

Who replies like this? "I have received your message..." not "Ya, email me at.."

So now we have to weed through and figure out who's ads are BS scams?

That one sounds like a scam. The first one I had reply like that I thought ok maybe they are just really rigid and detailed. Then I sent an email asking to come look at whatever it was and the reply was for me to send a deposit to reserve a time to look at it so that I would be sure to show and not waste their time. So then I deleted the conversation.

Raleigh CL has been bombarded by adds like this for weeks, cars, suvs, trucks w ridiculously low prices. Often the descriptions/features read like a 4th grader or somebody in nigeria who never drove a car or truck wrote them. I have called about 5 in the last few months (when they had a phone # local area code) and only get voicemail, they all texted me back telling me to e-mail them. I don't have a smartphone and I'm not emailing anybody that I can't talk to on the phone.

Avoid anyone who wants to contact via email outside the CL system, but you can begin communications but beware if not willing to meet face to face. Avoid anyone wanting to pay by check. Avoid anyone wanting to "ship" anything and mail you a "money order", "check" or "cashier's check". These will be fake and overpriced, so you mail them cash back, or pay a fake shipping company with your real cash, while the bank comes back a few days later saying the instrument was fake. When people text, pay attention to the number. If it changes as conversations progress = bad news. If you call a text number and it happens to be a google voice number, or skype number - beware.

Basically, do not deal with anyone that you can't meet face to face and pay with cash. You can't even trust people who want you to "meet their friend". Sometimes people are putting up pictures of someone else's vehicle, they will say they are out of town and ask you pay them online and they will have their neighbor put the keys on the vehicle somewhere etc.

Also avoid any CL post that has only one picture, pictures that are sub-par (grainy, low res, or appear smaller like a thumbnail compared to other 'normal' pictures on CL).

Common sense, but never pay anyone as "friends" via PayPal (PayPal will not give money back for scams this way, as you 'gifted' the money), and never pay anyone via prepaid debit cards.

Contact my buddy Kevin Murray (336) 681-5643 he sells used cars on the side. Tell him Matt Mitchell gave you his number. He will help you out.

I have never contacted anyone by emailing them directly, as you were asked to do. I think that some of these ads are scams just to get email addresses they can sell. I will only correspond via phone or the Craigslist reply system.
