Yep. And the size of the area can be pretty damn big. A super useful thing to do is to download the whole half of the state you live in. I do that about every 6 months.Avenza maps is great for this around the NC mountains. Google Maps dies have the option to preload the maps for areas you frequent which is nice.
Downside is when there's been road construction or a new road, it gets all confused b/c the map is then out of sync with where you are and its thinks you're offroad
But the REAL better reason to do this is that it means that (1) you aren't using an cell data when navigating around and more importantly (2) it means Google isn't sending data tracking your whereabouts back to them.
